Extended Warranty Recommendations?

Can you let me know what the prevailing wisdom is regarding a good extended warranty for GS1200 in Canada? My bike will be approaching the end of regular warranty in the new year and I'm thinking about options.

The offering from my local dealer came with a condition in the T&C's calling for all maintenance to be completed by a Lic. dealership in order for the contract to remain in force. This includes oil changes - so if you perform your own maintenance or oil change you have just lost extended coverage, so that's a non starter.

Any advice or experience with less draconian customer offerings out there?

Appreciate any insights.

Would love to know as well. I have never heard of anything for BMW. I know Harley has options. I am fine with the regular service at the specified mileage, but not for things like oil changes which I do myself.

I had option to buy an extended warranty on my '08 GS about a year ago. I didn't look at the fine print on anything, instead I worked out in my head that anything catastrauphic that would have gone wrong with my bike would have happened in the first 3 yrs of the regular warranty,,,,so I didn't bother with the extended.

Thanks for the feedback, Steve I'm heading down the same thought road as you. Pricewise they weren't too bad @ just under 1600 for 4 yrs coverage but the handcuff to dealership is crap.
I might talk to the manager and see if any mood to strike or amend that clause.
Will see, also thinking that if they are pissy at the sell stage, the relationship isn't going to get any better with age.

extended warranty "Wisdom"

...well...I guess it depends....hindsight being what it is...

While in Southern Mexico I broke down...thirty days (30 days) after my three year warranty expired on my 2007 Dakar. We (my bike and I) were many, many, kilometers from a BMW shop....I was screwed...if it had not been for a really great Mexican family I would have been out many, many more dollars than that fiasco caused....it did add an interesting dimension to my trip though....

In hindsight I'd get extended warranty again....YMMD...

my 02 centavos worth...

good luck

yatman in Beautiful Victoria, B.C. where we can ride pretty much ALL year around...hopefully no earthquakes or tsunamis...
