I know for a fact that this practice has encouraged many riders to make a riskier pass on a double yellow with less visibility, rather than wait for an upcoming passing zone, because the risk of a speeding ticket is percieved to be lower.
The OPP in Ontario set up nearly ALL their traps on secondary highways (like Hwy 7) in the passing zones for this very reason.

No one can convince me that cops enforcing speeding is about safety. Certainly not when every cop I know routinely speeds - they even refer to their off duty marked clothing as "radar proof" for chrissakes.

It is obviously about the money. Maybe not to the little cop shop in Arkansas but it all goes into government coffers.

I'd be interested in reading any independent study that shows that speed enforcement, in and of itself, has reduced accidents. I suspect the latter is more likely, for the reasons noted above. Slow traffic infuriates traffic, leads to traffic vigilantism and risk taking.

Not entirely true. HJC makes a youth model now with a smaller shell. Works great for my 9 yo son.

How about the infamous Linndale Ohio, a small jurisdiction that interstate 71 runs through for less than 1/4 mile. They posted a 60 mile speed limit in the section and promptly wrote 10's of thousands of tickets.

This town of 117 people used it to but several cop cars, equipment, court and pay them selves BIG salaries. It is so bad, both state and federal governments have been trying to shut them down for years.

Nope, not in my neck of the woods. Both genders are firefighters, because as someone else stated, that's what they do.

At some "bike week", the guy who blames the cop for the crash will sue the chick who flashed her boobies, for making him run off the road....

Smaller amounts are directed into various state mandated funds for driver education, seat belts, EMS, etc.

Clearly it's all about the benjamins.
so 100% of uncontested ticket revenue is distributed between the various governments? that was my point.

Years ago a couple of babes in a convertible in the LA area were flashing semi's. One truck driver did get s distracted and hit a half dozen cars.

Next day newspaper headline read, "Bears Two, Rams Six."

I agree with this, but with one major caveat. It has to be a legitimate school zone and a legitimate construction zone. There are more than one school zones around here that say "20 mph when children present". In one case that sign is at the bottom of a quarter mile long hill leading up to a school just over the hill. You can't see the school, or any kids, until you crest the hill. Another school around here has the flashing school zone signs that are automated. They still flash at the correct times, even on school holidays, school closure days due to weather, etc. That same school has absolutely '0' kids who leave the school on foot. The school is a 1/4 mile back from the road, and is completely fenced around the perimeter. But if you go over 20mph you will get a ticket.

I was driving down I-59 a couple of weeks ago riding to Barber for the Vintage Festival. There would suddenly be a 1/2 mile of construction barrels on the shoulder next to a sign that said "Speeding fines tripled in construction zones". That's it. Just a bunch of barrels on the shoulder. No workers, no work, no projects started, nothing. Just a nice plain clean stretch of highway with this little gold mine of revenue raising at 9:00 at night.

It's shit like that which makes us less tolerant of speed enforcement. If I go through Deals Gap at 10 mph over I will get a ticket if there is a cop present. But if someone is riding a trike, rear wheels crossing over the center line in every lane, running half the speed limit and holding up 15 other vehicles, not one cop will enforce the "impeding Traffic" law we have on the books in our state or stop a slow trike for crossing the line. Cross it on a sport bike and they treat you like public enemy number one, but three or more wheels get a break.

When I see that I can't help but think it is about money and not safety.

All this talk about speeding and tickets. I'm just trying to get slow people to stop cruising in the passing lane.

Sent from the voices in my head and transcribed by their drinking buddy...

But saying it's for revenue is inaccurate.

It would be pointless, from a revenue standpoint, for me to write tickets all day long, because the city would see so little of the money. Yes, the money goes somewhere, but it does not directly benefit me, my department, my city, or even my region in any appreciable way. Thus, there is no individual motivation for me to write tickets for revenue.
