COMPARE
If you are going to compare with the Montana 650t then you should compare using the Monterra + 100K Topo = $699.99

Not sure why anyone outside the US would be interested in a unit with US 100K Topo maps though.

Well, maybe, but you can obtain free topo maps for the world and save $50.

The Monterra will benefit from DEM maps according to Garmin when using the new 3D MapMerge™feature.

I know the Nexus isn't waterproof, but it seems I will come out ahead of the game in both cost and performance by adding an Otterbox or similar waterproof case to the mix.

Looking forward to the reviews to better help me evaluate the options.
Based upon the Monterra website, I'm expecting the Monterra to run most Android apps. The only app restrictions that I can think of would be apps that require cellular radio and/or apps that require root level access. No reason why any other app shouldn't run just fine but that will all depend upon how Garmin certifies the Monterra with Google Play.

As for your comparison between a small-tablet and the Monterra, I'm not even sure where to start. The only thing they have in common is the Android OS kernel and even then they most certainly will not be at the same version level or have the same "enhancements" from the manufacturer.

And not to get too technical or to put too fine a point on it the new V7 of Google Maps on Android sort of really sucks for navigation compared to the old V6. And, they ain't goin back!

So, if you go Android phone you will probably need to buy a 3rd party nav app and maps. Perhaps even the Garmin purchased app (forget the name right now)

Except of course, for one huge difference - the transflective screen on the Monterra. OLED and backlit LCD screens don't have anywhere near the outdoor readability of transflective screens. The software available in the play store doesn't really compare to Garmin software either, though there's always hope that that will change.

All good points advocating "The right tool for the job."

Looking forward to the release and reviews.

Release date update?

I though the release date was Nov. 5... Am I jumping the gun in eager anticipation? Has the date changed? Anyone know anything?

Yes, me too. But if we're going to hope, let's hope it'll be ready soon
