Top end engine replacement cost

Being quoted almost 5k to fix my 09 KLR after she somehow dropped all her oil and went bang.

Does this sound reasonable or am I being stitched up?

Sounds too rich for me , try thumper racing in the US see if they do a big bore kit

surely you would be better off buying another, making the best of both and parting out the leftovers?

I know f all about rebuild costs, but 5k seems a lot when there are low k models on sale for 3-5k.

I saw a vid once of a guy on a klr making contact with a rock that tore of his sump plug. wonder if his insurance covered him for the repairs.?

I had thought of buying another, but I have this one set up how I like it (ventura rack/panniers/crash bars/12v outlet/GPS mount/suspension etc) so I figured I'd get it repaired.

My only concern was that the repair cost seems excessive.

If it has run out of oil there could very likely be crankshaft damage which would send the cost into orbit. I think Mannheims & Pickles have auction rooms in T/ville. Might be worth keeping an eye out for a stat. write off klr. I cant imagine they have changed much over the years so I'm guessing any later model, preferably low k write off would be a good thing & you'd end up with a stack of other spares as well Even Brissy might be worthwhile checking depending on freight$

Chuck in a couple extra k and you can buy a new one. Move all the bits over from the old one and then part it out. Sorry, no idea if the 09 is the same as current bike.
I think dirty Dennis is on the money, how much other damage has been done?

Wrong side of the country but there is probably going to be a late model one owner well looked after mostly road use write off coming up over here in Perth. Upside down into some BIG rocks at very low speed and no it was not me, l just helped recover it.
We could break it down and box it up small or just wheel it onto a truck. Still rides.

Bin the frame & all the rooted bulky bits, engine, wiring, electrics & assorted bits into a box weighing say 50 kg on a small skid, might cost a couple for freight to the far north or see how much Waynes M/C transport would charge wheel on/ wheel off

Before anyone jumps on the "stealership" bandwagon;
if it's lost all the oil and gone bang you don't want just a top end rebuild or it's going to be half a job.
Strip the thing to the cases and see what the actual story is.
We've just finished an XR650r that came in for a rattly cam chain. It turned into a full rebuild including repinning the crank and replacing the piston, cam, rod and most of the ancillaries. Poor bastard isn't getting much if any change from $3k and he's got a bargain price for the time we've put in. But now it's pretty much a new engine.
For $5k it would need to be the box as well...
An inmate here brought me their DRz after it locked up. It was looking like a many thousand $$ job to get rebuilt after the head lost oil pressure and ate the cam journal and heat pinched the piston. It took the main with it and a bunch of other parts. He found a repairable write off and got an awesome deal, now the job is just an engine swap over. When it's done he'll probably part the rolling chassis out and it'll pay for itself.
Might be worth spending a bit of time looking around at options.

Can't find any stat writeoffs nearby (one in Sydney, freight cost would kill that idea I imagine), so looking at cheap second handers. Saw one nearby with 44k kms on it that might work.

Guess I'll talk to the mechanic today about options. Thanks for all the input so far :)

I being the inmate that lupine mentioned about the DRZ being munched was lucky enough that there are a heap of drz's around and yes parting out the remainder will definitely help with the wallet damage !! I sadly had the top end redone only under 1000km before my implosion and the cost for was $1700 so $5000 sounds harsh ?
