ONF Veteran's Day Weekend

A friend of mine from GA is thinking about coming to visit over Veteran's Day Weekend, Nov. 7-10. We were thinking about going riding down in Ocala but I noticed it looks like the first weekend of gun season. What do y'all think about this? Will we be ok if we stay on the service roads?

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I've ridden out there when the "hunters" yahoos hunting from the back of their trucks are out and never had any issues.

BTW... that's the same dates as this shindig...

Not too far from ONF.

I grew up dog hunting (what ONF is known for) in Osceola NF and I would not recommend being out there during opening weekend.
Not only will it be the busiest day of the year because everyone has been waiting all year to get out, but it also messes with the hunting of the hunters who have a very limited season while we can ride all year. People drive fast to cut their dogs and to get in front of the deer. If you come riding by you can turn the deer and mess up a spot they're stopped at.

This may be way out of the way, but that area is massive and gun season doesn't come in till way later.
I still wouldn't ride real early or late to respect the bow hunters.

Thanks for the advice. I was planning on going to Ocala not Osceola. I wish it wasn't opening weekend, but this is also the only time my friend and I can both get off work. I think Eglin is just too far from Gainesville where I live, but I am considering it.

If you can't make it to Eglin, let me know via PM and I can shoot you some other predominately dirt dual sport routes in the Gainesville area (I live in Gainesville).

I rode there Tuesday with a few other locals and did not see any hunters or anybody at all. Mostly rode Alexander springs area and around the bombing range. I would not go out there during the weekend like everyone else said. The sand was nice and packed with the little bit of rain we got.

There are quite a few free topo maps that are pretty darn good for florida forestry roads. Check out the subforum!

Edit: Found it. Get the Florida Topo

Probably had something to do with it not being hunting season last Tuesday...

Gun season starts in the AM. Stay safe, remember those folks wait all year for 2 short months so be courteous.
