1) the gas cap flips the wrong way to be a /6.
2) The /5 has screw on badges whilst the /6 has stick-on.

I see this on Ebay constantly. A /5 tank, obviously because it has screw on emblems, and the seller advertises it as suitable for a /6.

Then somebody posts here the other day that the screw on emblems were carried over into the first /6 tanks.

I have never seen such a tank. I have in my possession a tank that came off a /5 with stick on emblems. This tank will not fit a /6 because the under tank space is not big enough for the Master Cylinder.

I have heard that a screw on emblem tank exists that will fit a /6...Please post a picture of the under side of this tank. I don't think there is such a thing.

My experience is that screw on emblems means it's a /5 tank. Stick on emblems means it is a /6 tank. There are a few /5 tanks with stick on emblems.

I have some very early /6 motorcycles and none have screw-on emblems.

I wonder if BMW made the disctinction between R60/6 tanks and R75/6 and R90/6. R60/6 tanks wouldn't need the space under them for the master cylinder (drum brakes) and if discovered off the bike would appear as /5 tanks with stick-on emblems. I wouldn't think BMW would make a run of these when it would be cheaper/faster to just crank out /6 tanks that could fit the master cylinder, but here are the possibilities:

R50/5, R60/5, and R75/5 tanks - screw-on emblems, without master cylinder, aluminum forward- (70-71) and rear- (72-on) flipping gas caps
R60/6 tanks - stick-on emblems, without master cylinder, chrome rear-flipping gas caps
R75/6 and R90/6 tanks - stick-on emblems, with master cylinder, chrome rear-flipping gas caps
R90S tanks - a different animal.

Since I have an R60/6, you'd think I'd take the tank off and compare it to my two R75/6s and R90/6.

The forward flipping gas cap aside. I am not a /5 guy. I don't own a /5 but I bought this tank that came off a /5 because it had stick on emblems. The seller was in total sympathy with what I wanted but he had no /6 bike to try the tank on. So I got a tank we think was original to this /5 and it doesn't fit my /6.

I have tried to bang the under side of this /5 tank with an air hammer and the longest blunt attachment I could come up with. It is not long enough to reach as deep as needed. My next plan is to try a Porta Power hydraulic body tool with the spreader attachment. I am going to make this tank fit some day if it kills both the tank and me it will fit on my bike.

BTW, this tank had an Aluminum gas cap so I really didn't loose much. The Aluminum gas caps can go for more than the tanks almost.

The gap for the under tank master cylinder came out before the /6 was in production. Submitted for your perusal; a /5 Toaster tank with screw on emblems and the gap for the M/C: ...and, the large tank with the screw on roundels that Josh is selling has the gap for the M/C too:

Yep, I was just reading that BMW started added that recess to their tanks in the middle of the /5 series, in anticipation of the /6 series.

No emblems on tank. It is original faded paint w/ original pin stripes.

My /7 tank has screw on emblems. So?

I had a toaster on my SWB /5. Later I changed to the large touring tank. later still I fitted a 90/6 front end. I don't recall getting another tank--or the seat the /6 tank would have required. But it was long ago and I may have forgotten.

I do know I had screw on emblems on tanks that didn't originally come with them because I have some extras of the special screws in my parts stash. But I've only had two airheads and I don't think I put screw on badges on the K. So I dunno.

I wanna see a pic of the underside too. (and such a pic might help sell it BTW)

Well, so long as you're cool with Santa Claus.

The MC on your /6 goes towards the front, right?

Check the tank length. Matches a /5 tank?

As in on it's way to France now or you stopped it from going to France ?
I had my blue '77 for about ten years after buying it from the dealer I worked at. Uncrated and PDI'd it myself. Raced it, crashed it, got tickets on it (lots) and foolishly sold it.
A couple of years ago I was doing a daily search for either an R100 or an RD400 daily, the Beemer came up first, but I still wouldn't mind an RD...
