If any of you guys would like to ride some rough & steep logging trails sometime there's a great area between Boone & Mtn. City that I'd be happy to lead small groups through. It's best on smaller bikes with knobbies. If it's not too damp decent d/s tires will do. I ride it on a WR450 or XT225, and take the ATVs there when it snows.

It's a very big area, maybe 7500 acres and about 10-12 miles long. Some of the trails are 40-50 years old and some are fresh cut. There are some hills that I can't always climb, but I've routed the whole area and know alternate exits & routes, so we won't get stuck at the bottom of a hill.

Also, Doe Mtn. OHV is planning to open soon. I think Aug. 31st. It runs between Mtn. City & Watauga Lake. I'll keep you all posted when I hear that it's finally open.

I know it's short notice, but I'm going trail riding tomorrow. If anybody wants to try some rough & steep, and I forgot to mention "rocky", let me know.

I've got tentative approval from the boss. What time would you be heading out?

I'm based in Winston, would take me a bit to get to Boone, but I can leave bright and early.

Cory,
It's about 2 hours for you. How about 10:00? I live here, so I can meet earlier if you want.

There's a big paved parking lot on the corner of Hwy 421 & Bulldog Rd that's easy to find & a good place to leave your truck if you're hauling the bike. Nothing's there, so gas up before you get there.

If anybody else wants to ride feel free to meet us. (Let us know, so we'll know to wait for you.)

Daniel, I probably can't make a Sunday ride, (unless the wife gets mad about something else first!)

10:00 is doable, I'll be riding up and will plan on carrying extra gas. I'll send you a PM with my cell number and shoot you another when I leave tomorrow morning.

Looking forward to riding new trails, thanks for the invite!

If that's being easy on me, I'd hate to see what it would have been like had he really stuck the screws to me...

Had a blast riding with you GlennR, thanks again for showing me around. I'd love to plan another Saturday just like that sometime soon. Easily the most fun I've had riding this year.

thanks again!

I knew that you would enjoy it!

Glenn is a great rider and has vast knowledge of that area.

I would like to join in someday but it will need to be strictly an OHV area since I don't have a lightweight Dual Sport anymore.

Doe Run sounds like a nice new area!

It was a perfect day on the trails. We tackled some pretty rough terrain. The trails were in great condition considering all the rain this summer. I'll be ready to ride again soon. Maybe camping on the mountain too, if anybody is up for it.

Daniel, how are you getting by without a dual sport?

Free X-Mas Trees

If you enjoy riding up to the mountains with your family to choose and cut your tree, one of my neighbors is giving them away for free. There's a variety of sizes, & pretty nice shapes. I didn't see any "Charlie Brown" trees.

They are on Wards Branch Rd, just off Hwy 321. About 20 minutes West of Boone. Bring a saw and wear boots or shoes with good grip, because it's steep. I got our tree a couple days ago, there were a few hundred (200-400?). Nobody was there, but a sign said "Be careful it's steep, take all you need for friends & family. God bless."

They aren't bundled, so are bulky. Need a pick-up, or maybe you can wrap it up in a tarp?

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Doe Mtn. is open. I bought a pass. ($60 per year, or $18 per day) But I haven't been riding there much yet. They don't have many technical trails yet (that I've heard of). Mostly easier two way trails. Even the tighter trails are two way. I'd planned on helping develop & clear motorcycle trails, but I'm not as excited about it now. (I was really disappointed that they are charging $18 for a day) I'll be happy to meet up & ride on Doe if anybody wants to sometime.

The main reason I haven't been riding there is because I have been riding on Stone Mtn., which is almost all steep technical riding, it's 1000' higher, has 10 times more trails, and it's only 15 minutes from my door. I'm always happy to show anybody the trails there too. Or I can give a list of the entrance roads if you'd rather explore it on your own, although it's a bit extreme to safely explore solo.
