Well, yes…actually the wishbone is a development of the straight axle, one needed to take place prior to the other.

Actually that was BMW writing, although that doesn't mean there's any kind of continuity with what they wrote 25 years ago. But I think it's entirely accurate to call it a further development of the Monolever (I'd have said refinement). The virtual longer swingarm is exactly how it works and is probably the easiest way for most people to understand it. Look up Tony Foale's work for more.

By the same token, the Monolever is a refinement of the twinshock, although they are quite different, and so it goes back to the hardtails.
