i tried to explain it.

Why I Ride... http://ichoosetoride.blogspot.com/20...hy-i-ride.html

I took a little spill Thursday and since then the family has been on my case about why I ride and how dangerous it is so I tried to explain it lol. I can't speak for everyone but if it applies to you feel free to share!

You know, I ask myself that question almost daily: Here's what I've come up with;

1. I'm older and it helps me stay sharp.
2. It's just damn fun. When I'm faced with a commute in the jeep, it bores the hell out of me. On the old K75 it's fun as hell.
3. I feel like "as long as I can ride, I can do damn near everything else....although not as many times

I ask, as a manner of reply, "Is there anything you do that you enjoy so much, that you can never ever see yourself not doing it anymore?" Usually followed by a blank stare, then a desire to continue the discussion about how dangerous, etc.

Sitting on the couch eating chips and drinking whiskey every day is dangerous too. Which is what I would do if I quit riding.

I never felt the need to rationalize why I ride.

I ride because I like it, as simple as that.

I doubt you will ever change their minds on something they have already decided on. After I had a serious accident, many people commented that I should/would quit riding, that's not going to happen!

after 30 years the choice not to ride is the problem.
it just feels as natural as walking.

I just bought a shirt with that on it.

Describing why you like to ride is as hard as describing why anybody likes anything. Who can tell you clearly why they like to listen to music or play a musical instrument? Can somebody explain why they like to look at art or to paint pictures? Why do some people like to sail boats or fly airplanes?

I think in the end it boils down to the fact that you need to fill your life with something you enjoy doing. Something that takes you away from all the little worries and annoyances of modern existence, that consumes your consciousness with only whatever is going on at this particular moment. You need something that not only distracts you but also fulfills you.

For us, here on this forum, clearly the thing that does that best is riding a motorcycle. It's an activity that is constantly challenging, where you never reach perfection but where you gain great satisfaction by feeling your skill increase. And while that's going on you're also able to see new places and experience the great natural beauty of this world. Why would anybody NOT want to do that?
