Meeting in Wausau today with ATV folks from MI, MN, and WI. Some progress made on improving coordination.

Trail Patrol Training

Previously I mentioned that it might be a good idea to get some off-highway motorcyclists certified as Trail Patrollers. This is a program that the ATV community runs. It is intended to help supervise the trail system.

Off-highway motorcyclists can become trail patrollers and patrol trails on which they are allowed using their motorcycles. Reports are made as to hours and miles patrolled to demonstrate that we are truly bearing much of the effort to take care of ourselves.

There are two classes coming up in which to get certified. One is 18 Jan 14 in Princeton, WI. The other is 28 Mar 14 in the Dells.

Details can be found here: http://trailpatrol.com/index.php/upcoming-events

To conduct operations, certified patrollers much operate in pairs. It is a good idea to get a good number of OHM people certified to facilitate that. There is a class of patroller that does not require you to be a safety instructor.

Volunteering to participate in this program is good for the motorized recreation community.

That seems like a good idea. I can't really say I would have time to put the hours in though with working 6 days a week :/

I'll talk to you about it when you get back. Often it is as simple as wearing the vest while doing one of our usual day rides. Then file a brief report about assistance rendered, miles covered, trails ridden, any issues, etc.

Might be in for the one in the Dells. My schedule should be a little more open by then.

Reminder Trail Patrol Training

Two Opportunities:

Saturday 18 Jan 14 Princeton, WI (near Green Lake - central location)

Friday, 28 Mar 14 Wisconsin Dells, WI

Since patrollers have to operate in pairs, it is a good idea to take a riding buddy with you.

As a reminder if you would like to be a part of our Trail Patrollers we do need an application filled out and sent back to us at the home office in Sheboygan. The link to the website is:
http://trailpatrol.com/index.php/upcoming-events . The forms are the following links:

http://trailpatrol.com/pdf/enrollment_application_2013.pdf
http://trailpatrol.com/pdf/ssa89b_2013.pdf
http://trailpatrol.com/pdf/authorization_and_releaseB.pdf

This will probably be it for training this year, so if your are interested, best to get on it now.

Questions about submitting an app and the detailed location of training?

The off-highway motorcycle legislation is going to go to a hearing very soon. We are 99.9% complete and the remaining detail will be fleshed out in the hearing process once the DNR must respond to the proposed bill formally.

It could be that the hearing will be later this month.

I am working on what we need to do to show support for the bill in the hearing. I will put the word out as to what participation and support we need from the motorcycling community for the hearing.

This has been a long journey.

In other news, I recently got an appointment to the Governor's Off-Road Vehicle Council. This used to be a DNR council but the ATV community sought a statute change to make it a Governor's council with the authority to take issues beyond the DNR. It principally deals with ATV money but there are overlapping interests with the OHM community so it is good that I am on it. I will continue to serve on the Governor's State Trails Council as well.

Thanks a lot for all your hard work Bryan! I am sure this is cutting into your riding time but we really appreciate everything and couldn't have a better representative. Do you have a trip planned for TX or someplace warm? Always look forward to your RR's.

Thanks Tim. I'm itching to go riding someplace warm(er) but I've got a lot of irons in the fire right now. Winter is a good time for me to work on some other issues. But, I also fit in some ride research and planning this time of year.
