Question Remove the cat from original exhaust?

Has anyone tried this as an alternative to buying aftermarket cans? Thinking of it since my Sebrings are way to loud and i cant find any inserts for them.

I did it. No problems so far.

I did it in conjumction with a canisterectomy, SAS removal and install of a H2W jet kit and snorkel.

I don't think the cans run any cooler and there is no change in the sound of the exhaust note. I just didn't need the cat in there anymore. Bike runs great.

I had a guy here in OKC that can weld stainless cut them out and re-weld the cans. He did an awesome, very clean job. You really wouldn't know it wasn't stock if I didn't tell you -- plus, the welds are hidden behind the rear plastics.

FYI, YMMV, IMHO, etc...

You can actually hog the cats out with a big-ass drill. Lay the cans on their side and secure them so they won't twist and spin with the drill. Be real careful and drag out the larger bits, then when there's only leetle pieces left carefully stand the can up and clean out the rest with a shop vac.

The tubes that go from the bulkhead behind the cat to the next chamber extend up an inch or so past the bulkhead so with the cans laying on their side - and then carefully standing them up to vacuum will prevent little pieces from dropping into the nether regions of the can.

It ends up being a lot less hassle than cutting them and rewelding them.

Did you do anything to the carbs? How was the performance difference to stock with cat?

De catted my stock cans - had to set the carbs back to 1 jet under stock due to the pre filter. Did make a clear difference to performance tho. But ive gone to the 2-1 GPR system which makes it seem trivial re weight n performance.

Can't compare as I have not ran other cans.

Cost me $35 if I remember correctly. In the grand scheme of things with the H2W jet kit, snorkel, blocking plates, etc. it wasn't much. Plus I helped a local fab guy/rider out that offered his services. I wasn't prepared to spend nearly a grand on Akros anyhow...

Qucik question - did decatting change the exhaust smell at all? After a ride does your gear/garage have a noticeable exhaust smell? I'm trying to determine if my jetting needs tweaked; or if this is a natural part of running catless.

You will notice more smell, especially if you are running rich.
