Traveled through Vietnam in March 2012. Weather in the south was very hot but up north is like PDX: cool with scattered showers

Thank you for sharing this lovely report. You both clearly had a great sense of adventure and the right spirit to take it all in stride.

200,000 dong for some rice and a few pieces of chicken was definitely rip-off. :) That's the price at a fancy restaurant in Saigon, not at a northern village.

And the majority of Ho Chi Minh City residents call their city Saigon. Some northerners prefer to call the city HCM City. You probably know why. As a Vietnamese-American, I don't even dare to call the city Ho Chi Minh City in any overseas Vietnamese community.

Highway 4C is so beautiful from your report. Definitely on my list now.

This is great!

Thanks for posting this most excellent report. A trip like this has been on my list for a long time. Once my Filipino fiance gets her passport, we are going to plan something similar. Thanks for your level of detail in describing the routes and requirements. Very helpful reference.

Thanks CA. Your RR was one I found before our trip, thanks for sharing it. I found inspiration in a few Vietnam RRs. You'll have to check out the north on your next trip. Cheers.

Nice ride report BA. Some great photos too. I recognize so many of the places, and we even stayed at some of the same hotels. Don't know why you were stressing about the permit for Ha Giang - I told you before you left that you'd get if from the first hotel you stayed at in the province!!

Like you I took great inspiration from Comrade Art in getting the confidence up to do the trip. And what an adventure it was.

Looking forward to the rest of your story....thanks

Thanks. Yeah, the north has spectacular vistas; would like to visit Dien Bien Phu in the future.
