Looks like the riders she started with today are all behind as well, possible navigation mistake?

Remember Bam Bam has a manager and team who have likely spent a lot fo time figuring all this stuff out and to some extent Bam Bam and other factory riders take orders or directions on strategy.
What you said makes sense but my gut feeling says other wise. Dakar was never won by someone just building up a lead in fast stages and "hanging off" the lead rider in navigation intense stages. Even if you are following someone else's tracks in the dunes, you still need to do a bit of work yourself with the roadbook, no ?

12P2 NUMBERS & ADVERTISING PLATES’ COLOURS
So as to be able to differentiate more easily between different categories, Machine race plates will be of different colours:
Group 1 (Elite A.S.O.) : yellow plates;
Class 2.1 (Super Production 0 to 450 cc) : white plates + SP;
Class 2.2 (Marathon 0 to 450 cc) : white plates + M;
Group 3 (Quad) : white plates.

About my earlier comment on earning Alien status - I meant it in terms of our evaluation of him. If he does what you have just written he will, no doubt be an alien.

Just for the guys new to the F5irehose, Only Cyril and Marc have "alien" status. The reason for this is because they have been so consistently fast, and after just a couple of days normally lead the field by a significant margin.
Barreda reminds me of a young F1 driver, fast as hell in the perfect conditions, but prone to crashing for the first year or two until experience and maturity get into sync. I believe he rides a little too explosively chasing stage wins when his view should be a little more long term.

That said, leading a stage from the opening is fairly new territory for Joan. He usually drops off significantly after a stage win so perhaps we are seeing some of that maturing in process.

Agreed

Its awesome having him in the race, its like a wildcard in poker. Who knows how it is going to play out. The smart money says he will have a crash or nav error but there is a part of me that wants to see him extend his lead day after day

+1. Or possibly a young 'Colin McRae' type!

You have to make sure the RB is on the correct KM, and it's not totally "easy" but it's "easier". The real challenge to this approach is if the alien realizes you're using them as a trail breaker. One response is to lead you way off course, fake an issue and let you pass, and leave your dumb, non-navigating ass out in the desert somewhere, hopelessly lost for who knows how long. I believe Stephan Peterhansel was infamous for doing this when he rode bikes.
