I remember that ride, that's where I met most of that group. I'm standing there but bike is not in photo.

Eh? Wedge no longer filling growlers

I was in Asheville to pick up some parts on Saturday and remembered to bring my growler. I stopped by the Wedge to get it filled, only to be told that they only sell their "pre-filled" growlers now. They told me that they have a "special machine" to fill the growlers. Has the Wedge become too successful?
I did notice a new patio area under construction out front.
I got my growler filled at Asheville Brewing over on Coxe Ave. with a nice IPA
I also went by the new Moto Vicious location, but since I was in a car, not on a bike I did not go in.

Just curious but was this a Wedge labeled growler? Until recently it was illegal to fill a growler unless it was from the same brewery. This has changed recently but I don't know the specifics. Additionally many breweries prefer to prefill the growlers using a counter pressure filler as it makes the growler last much longer. If it was a Wedge growler they should have at least given you credit for returning the original.

No, I'm from the Johnson City TN area and the growler was from a local place. They wanted a $4 deposit for their growler + the cost of the beer and also only offer the Iron Rail IPA, I happen to like the Iron Rail, so that is not an issue. Maybe the "special filler" was a pressure filler to preserve carbonation.

Anyone care to share a few of their favorite forest service roads or trails in the Boone/Blowing Rock area? Trying to plan a day trip from Greensboro.

I would be up for it next weekend.

I have my kids this weekend. Hopefully going to ride some real dirt with them on Sunday.

We rode Maple Sally yesterday. If you're in the area, it would be a shame to miss it. Pineola Road is nice as well. I don't remember names or numbers off of the top of my head, but there are three roads on the west side of 181. The middle one is gated at the moment. The bottom road is accessed via Simpson Creek. The top road by Gingercake Acres. Old 105 is a nice jaunt as well.

Maple Sally was in nice shape and was even dusty in spots. All of the county (Caldwell County) maintained roads that we were on yesterday had been graded and in places had large amounts of fresh gravel dumped on them. They were mushy.

Yea it was pretty fun. Only did a small portion. I was just showing a friend where it was. Its been a couple years since I've ridden all the way to rock house. I was on a exc or dr or something. Remember it being mostly just a badly degraded dirt road, unless you veered off onto the abundant side trails, has it gotten worse in the last couple years the further you go in?

Ended up doing Maple Sally and had a blast until I almost ended up as a new hood ornament for a red Ford Ranger coming around one of those blind curves.

Thinking about next Sunday. A couple of days ago the seasonal horse trails were in great shape - no ice and not too much slop. Need to see how the forecast plays out, as I look outside at ice on the deck.
