Question(s) :

Having seen quite a few choppers in videos / stills pictures, do the major teams run spotter choppers like Baja?

Or are they banned outright?

Oh, and I noticed on the official Dakar site, mention only of mechanical problems with regards to Pals withdrawal from the event. The 'theft / hijack' of his bike must be just a passing, mass halucination .......................

UNless things have changed from Africa days I would assume that basic maintenance items, fluids, filter tyres and emergency repairs would certainly be allowed... if done solely by the rider.
The point with 'Marathon' is that is meant to be an extended stage - with no service whatsoever - the reason they stop overnight is really only to sleep - as you couldn't very well have a single +/-1500km stage run over 24hours, if only for safety's sake...

Therefore the Malle Moto boxes (and other riders who elect to take a box) shouldn't actually be available at the Marathon bivouac - the one concession last year was the ELF truck that had fluids (oil) on board - the presumption that the riders can take a spare oil filter and air filter in their jacket pockets at the start of the Marathon stage/s?

Also, tyres (even unmounted) wouldn't fit in the regulation Pierre Henry boxes anyway, so they'd have to be take separately... while carrying mounted spare wheels & tyres for everyone (currently 145 riders) to the Marathon bivouac would be a logistical non-no anyway.

I was simply speculating whether one of the tyre companies would have a truck/van at the bivvy and be selling/distributing tyres to those that want/need them (in the same way as ELF had oil available last year) - even though as Troy pointed out above, that is not in the spirit of 'Marathon' regs.

Only air support allowed is the organisations (ASO). Medivac, film/media, event director and security/emergency paramedic choppers* - but no team air support. Not sure off my head how many birds there are... it is on the dakar.com homepage somewhere i recall?

The ASO PR people do tend to play down occurences with any reference to "hijacks" etc. Understandably,... that's why you come here... f5or all the dirt!

Due to the severe weather of the last few days, the special section the third stage has been shortened: the bikes and quads will start from the 130 km point on the original route. The start time has also been put back to 9.50 AM local time. The cars and trucks will set off from the originally planned start, but will finish after 222 km instead of the 245 km originally planned.
It was posted (in french) here:http://www.francetvsport.fr/dakar/etape-en-direct at 06:48. but I didn't get a chance to post it here.

Had to Google that, Jen. I'm not much for keeping up with movies, obviously.
Best to you and Piglet (and the LC4-50 Project)!

Hi Troy,

Yes still riding but I haven't raced competitively for a couple of years now.
Glued to the Dakar though and of course, wishing I was 10 years younger (or even 20!)

10 years since my last Dakar!
