Tough call in the instance an official tells you to go a different direction.

If it were a member of the public though or my roadboook, I'd choose the roadbook every time

I mapped it last night, but didn't believe they would really go there, so I assumed I was in the wrong place and quit mapping. Now I see on video that they did indeed go there. Impressive!

Staff indeed could have been there and legitimately pointed folks in the right direction
this was at the highest peak as Yan said.

One thing to keep in mind here however is that Barreda made a point of saying how on the decent
there were many places where one could get confused and go the wrong way, and that he really took his time
making sure he was on track.

From all the comments and info all I can piece together is that this truly was an epic stage, from both difficulty of piste, altitude, terrain and navigation perspectives and that there were a few (or even just one) very tricky and crucial notes in the book that got a whole lot of people into a whole heap of trouble.

I am having a tough time at the moment coming up with anything other then "follow-the-wrong gate"

zis iz d Dakar after all

Hogwild- I know youre a guy with a job and all-- but could you locate the ravine they all went down and couldnt get back out of? It must be just on the other side of that little hill in the background

Interesting how those little tracks in the sand get overused as clues

It really would be a different world if the preceding bikes left no trace. THere would be folks stretched out over a 50 mile wide front :loll

Here's the closest I could come for the first part of stage 4 for motos. There's a cool slot wash coming into Bella Vista where there will be a lot of spectators watching.

Google Earth file for part of motos only Stage 4

simple trick: pick out a few hotties (I mean guys - not Laia ) and have her follow too

unfortunately a bunch of the cute guys are already gone...

I have Eurosport video of Etienne last year, hopped out the heli, pointing direction for one of the Aliens, and perhaps others. I think it was a tricky section.
