I'd say keep an eye on the super enduro ...
Since you're collecting, this is one to have in your garage!

It's also "far" from the Tiger, so they will co-exist in peace

That's a good suggestion. However, I keep going back to pictures of that Baja. It's just such a bad assed bike!

Man! The 990 just speaks to me. But, the original question: Why would I have a Tiger 800 XC and a 990?

As a Tiger (955i) owner who contemplates an 800XC and 990 as an eventual replacement for my 955i, I encourage you to get the 990, ride them both for a while, and post a comparison review.....

It seem to me that the two bikes are more alike than different, so having both probably won't make sense, but that doesn't mean one won't win out for any number of reasons. I love the look, sound and off-road performance of the 990, so I get what you're saying about the siren's call.... (my words, not yours)....

Well, it looks like you have had your share of bikes… and travels. Kudos!

I might get the 500 and use the extra scratch to make the Tiger more off road worthy. Like this bike:

The Freedom Cycle build on the XC is very cool.... no doubt.

I don't think you can go wrong with choosing a smaller, lighter single cylinder bike for off-road riding. If I were a bigger, younger, stronger guy I would go more places off-road with the Tiger, but at 160lbs and 55 years of age I find the smaller bike more to my liking in the dirt.... and even just for pushing around in the garage.... who knows, maybe just a lone 690 in the garage one day....

Have fun and keep posting up your progress....

Great choice! A buddy of mine bought one last summer - nothing but good things to say about. He did change up the gearing to make it a bit more trail worthy, and says that this has not made it bad for road use either. BUT really helps off pavement!

very nice. I was just looking back for this thread because a 690 popped up on CL in my neck of the woods. That one looks like it's ready to get dirty ;)

I was talking to a guy on a 690 on Sunday and he loves his, but really wants a 500 now. Grass is always greener!
