Nine years ago we lost Fabrizio Meoni on the Dakar. Once you have seen footage of Fabrizio blasting through the desert sands on a 950 Adventure, you will never forget ....................

At the time it was not common knowledge that he was personally supporting a school in Dakar and his work has been carried on by the Fabrizo Meoni Foundation

http://www.fondazionefabriziomeoni.i...izio_meoni.php

Cyril Despres published a book covering his (at the time) 4 Dakar victories and all the profits from the book go to supporting the work started by Fabrizio - I have a copy and can strongly recommend it as an essential item for any Dakar fan's bookshelf.

The book can be purchased here http://www.cyrildespres-shop.com/default.asp?pgflngid=1

Take a look - it's for a good cause

will do that !!!

Oops, that's supposed to say "2014" not 2013
LOVED seeing them pull that guys bike back up the hill so he could continue!! That would have been some ride down!!

Posting a few pics from my friend's FB page. He is following the Dakar2014 all the way till the end. These are all old pics, but probably from a different pespective - that of a spectator following the Juggernaut.

"Helicopter chase is on as they try to catch Marc Coma in action! He was 160 + at this point" - the 160+ is astounding after you see the terrain. Its not flat open desert but rocky riverbed !!

His words - "Chatting with Quin cody before the start of second special of Day 6 after the DZ zone....He said he so wanted to do it on bikes but coudn't get a sponsor in time, so he's doing navigation for B.J. Baldwain. They are by far the fastest car in Dakar but if keeps breaking down everyday. What a shame."

Not an action pic, but i know you wont object

Pedro at the start line

Team Mongolia Damdinkhorloo Boldbaatar (did i get it right Neil ? - typed it without looking)

thanks to Nick Sarao for the pics.

I don't know how those blokes cope - it's bad enough - heat - for those of us that have grown up with heat. Cripes, and I've the luxury of waiting 'til 6 in the evening, to go for a ride, as I am doing now.

Then, there's the altitude. That, I've not had to deal with - riding DH in Switzerland ( hey my local "massive mountains" I ride in are lucky to be 1300 meters elevation, max height, so SwZ is the highest I've been when not in a pressurized fuselage), I think, would have given me no idea of how bad things could be on that front.

When RK ( I worked at Off Road Imports for a number of years) got back from the Incas Rally, (decades ago - time does fly by) , his tales of altitude sickness were an eye opener - even from his side of being a spectator / race 'helper'. A rider in those conditions, with such high heat ................. it would take a lot 'everything' from them, to get through it.

Hi Bluebull,

I've done the weighted average calc (based on total starters) and it came out to 37.8%

From this you could deduce that recent years (excluding 2014) have been easier than the 'average' Dakar.

Thats a good point SSason maybe just Robert Van Pelt!!

And I think Sam's training will be about building muscle endurance, and working the lungs and heart Hard!! Alot of top athletes get comfortable where it hurts and the place the majority of us will only touch on occasionally and vow to ourselves not to go back there any time soon. Get comfortable where it sucks!!
Myway keep up the Awesome work!

the motorcycle and quad peloton is winding its way towards the small town of abra pampa, not far from the start of today's special. The course consists of two timed sections separated by a short 8 km neutralised stretch and is set to be one of the big moments of discovery of the 2014 dakar. 85 motorcycles and 17 quads were greenlighted to start on sunday morning.

Crazy elevation today, most of the stage is above 3000m and peaks a little short of 4k m...

Am I alone in here?
