From this you could deduce that recent years (excluding 2014) have been easier than the 'average' Dakar.
Thanks that's an interesting stat!

The motorcycle and quad peloton is winding its way towards the small town of Abra Pampa, not far from the start of today's special. The course consists of two timed sections separated by a short 8 km neutralised stretch and is set to be one of the big moments of discovery of the 2014 Dakar. 85 motorcycles and 17 quads were greenlighted to start on Sunday morning.
  • 08:01 : Stage 7: Salta–Salta or Salta–Uyuni?

The motorcycles and quads will not be racing on the same course as the cars and trucks today. The riders will tackle another marathon stage which will take them to the Salar de Uyuni as the Dakar sets foot in Bolivia for the first time. Before the salt flat will come a tricky mountain labyrinth in which the slightest mistake will carry a hefty price tag. The drivers, on the other hand, will tackle a 500 km timed loop with a variety of speeds and landscapes, including long stretches of high-altitude, high-speed racing.

That big moment of discovery will be where they ride in a riverbed that goes through a solid wall of rock. Its an amazing place. Its a dead end for normal traffic so they must have some off pist up some ridges after that!!

Hmmm, did Troy just go AWOL again like he did last year???

Perhaps he is taking a sabbatical to compose a new song?

the start of today's special, originally scheduled for 9:15 am local time, has been delayed for at least 30 minutes for the same reason: The helicopters cannot fly with such low clouds.

Pain changed his engine a lot earlier, maybe before the marathon stage. Will check the overalls from the earlier stages for that.

edit: changed engine after marathon stage 4...

if I'm correct, Laias teammate is out already, so she should have a full team behind her and for sure some more support from HRC aswell ... looks promising!

via @damonf1:

Orly Terranova was penalized 15 minutes for accidentally ramming the Colombian rider Juan Sebastián Toro. With this change, Terranova fell to 4th place in the overall standings in Cars.
