Russ (LKN4DRT) and I did some route recon today. There are miles and miles of terrain like this. Some dunes are more challenging than this, some easier. Plus we did a lot if miles of easy dirt roads. Overall it was a successful trip.

I'm in!!

Looking forward to Rally Diabolico. The pictures of the Altar Dunes terrain remind me of images of northern Africa....also a fair bit closer to home!
Looks like a lot of fun and I'm sure the rally master has cooked up some awesome routes

Its so cool to see this coming together. The pics of the Altar dunes are mesmerizing. I'm already over committed with a month on the road doing Mex1K, Alcan 5000, and a ride from San Diego to Seattle to connect the two, but the moment that deposits are being taken for what I hope will be the second annual event for 2015 I'm in! Cheers to the guys behind this for putting in what I imagine is a ton of time and effort into a labor of love. Thanks and see y'all next year.

Imagine a landmark 40 kilometers away, far beyond the distant dune in this image. And imagine the roadbook says go at a compass heading of 192 to get to that landmark point 40 kilometers away.

Now imagine yourself picking your own line over, around, and through the wide open desert and dunes to get to that far-off point. We don't care what line you take to get there, just get there! In this off-piste (HP) section there's no road or trail, no defined corridor, no BLM limits, just man and machine versus wide open desert. Pick your own way, outsmart the other guys, and do what it takes to get there first. That's the diabolical section this photo was taken from.

We were just out there doing recon, and checking that the compass heading and distance are right. In early April, YOU should be out there too.

This is pure freedom in off-road racing!

My box from RMS and my pile of stuff from HDB is now sitting on my bench, staring at me. Daring me to get ready for Diabolico.

Time to start reading the manuals.

Re: tires - what are the rules for tires for the rally? Must they be DOT legal, or can I run my usual S12s?

Check the Rules
I think they have to be FIM/Dot tires
