There is this ghost town just inside the Laos side of the border with China.
The story i heard was the Chinese money built about 10 hotels and about 3000 rooms plus a casino to bring business to Laos. The people of Laos were not wecome. Just rich Chinese men looking for a good time. They brought in the girls from Laos. But the party crashed when the word got out that it was more than a gambling trip for these men.
The casino closed and all but two hotels shut down.
It was a real ghost town.
And since i had camped in abandoned houses and restaurants along the way, i can now say that i camped in an abandoned five star hotel.

[Here's a shot at the almost finished yet abandoned hotel at the Laos border
I pulled my moto in to the lobby and pitched my tent right there. I was probably the first over night guest

I'm all for guerrilla style camping, and I've done my fair share of it, but I gotta say you have come up with some pretty awesome places to throw the tent down. This one is up near the top of the list just for the weirdness of it. Thanks for all the reporting, still following and enjoying the stories.

The places, people, and things that you find in your path are amazing and unusual. You inspire me to get off the beaten path.

Ed, loving reading about your journey. I'm still in Sept 2012. You are inspiring many of us. Hope your lady is there when you get home. I salute her too.

There's a bit more to the decline of Boten than a few ladies of negotiable affection. I believe that there were lots of guys coming across the border, losing their shirts, and more, in the Casino... and ending up in jail.... which caused the shutdown.

There's still some of those ladies there btw... did you manage to escape their clutches, Ed?

A Chinese company has bought up big around there and hopes to get it going again. We (I was there with 2 other guys) stayed in the hotel where the company has its staff... a 4+ star hotel and we paid $9 a night.... although they would only take Chinese notes, so we had to exchange USD for Yuan at the supermarket.

A fascinating place... and a brilliant road leading to it. I imagine you'll be heading towards the Plain of Jars?

Making brooms in northern laos is big business. You see these workers everywhere collecting these plants to sell to the broom plants. From behind the plants seem to be walking on their own
