Crossing KS on dirt

This had been on my to do list for a while and I finally got to get a stab at it, granted it was on the motorcycle related to do list so it was not that painful

Regularly here, or other local forums, there is somebody that pops up asking suggestion to cross KS beside I70. As you know depending if you want to stay north, or south different paved roads fit the bill.

In any case, I prefer to ride dirt so I just tried to plot out a route that is somewhat interesting, low maintenance, nice scenery but that does not take a week to do. I also tried to think ahead for gas especially out west and for potential camping spots.

In any case, here is a first stab at it:

Link to garmin route
Link to gpx file

In the last month I got to ride everything East of Scott city. West of Scott, I have rode most of it but it has been a while. In any case, the ride could probably be improved somewhat but that is a start. If you are heading to CO and want to check out the western part for me, please let me know.

Also I have to admit that the NE part could probably used some improvements, too many people and houses I guess

I plan on doing this myself. North of I-70 going west and then south of I-70 returning. Farm to Market dirt roads are a gas. Farm dogs aren't my favorite things but the views are dynamic!!

....and who said Kansas was flat?

Have fun, share your track when you come back. I have a tour of KS route somewhere that I need to try out. 1,700 miles all on dirt

Hey Luc,

Good stuff---thanks !!!! Been a long time since we rode together.

My son lives in Lenexa, Ks. I go there often---and always visit him when I go out West------and if you wanted a buddy on any of your scouting rides-----get in touch with me--------I'm retired and if I'm not gone somewhere else I probably could join you----and maybe use my sons place to ride out of.
Sure would like to stand next to that worlds largest ball of twine----to hell with TerrDeFeugo or whatever that's called----I want to stand next to the ball of twine.

My sister lives in Kingman on a huge ranch---and my brother lives in Lawrence.

E-mail is best for me.

Great---and when scouting I don't mind hitting dead ends---turning around----riding routes that just don't work out---as long as I'm out riding.
Some people get fussy and cranky when that happens.

You ride your 950 on these rides mostly--------or your dirt bike ???

Mark

Mark,

I would be on the big bike, perfect bike for KS especially if you have to rack up highway miles in the evening before dark ;-)

Weather?

Forgive my ignorance. I know very little of this area. Having only passed thru a few times by truck along the major highways.

How early can someone travel thru this area? I'm looking at riding in from the west (Denver hopefully)
following this route and then cutting off to Wichita.
Are these expected to be fast gravel/rural roads? Is there a lot of snow on the ground now or has it cleared up?

With some luck, I'll be leaving Ca in two weeks. Taking the long way back to work (New Orleans).

If it works out I'll definitely send you the as ridden tracks.

You probably could do it tomorrow if you wanted to. In was above 70 today so I doubt that there is very much snow left if there was any snow drift left to start with. I probably would just watch for muddy spots, but this is true for anytime of the year as storms may have gone through before you get there. Typically with the heat and the wind things dry out pretty quick out here.

Yes especially on the part you would be doing there is a lot of fast gravel/dirt roads. The easy part in KS is that it is easy enough to bypass a part you do not like and come back to the road later on.

Would love to see your tracks and pictures when you are done.

That's great news.

I'll reply in this thread when I leave in case you want to ride along.

Either way, I'll surely share tracks and pictures.

I am assuming you did not come this way

Unfortunately not. I had my bike packed up and ready to leave.

Then work called and requested my presence in Houston for meetings. Meetings that never happened .

Very disappointing.

Leave it to work to screw up the best motorcycle plans...

I feel your pain, been there done that, not fun! Let me know if you ever plan on doing it, I may need a work relieve excursion and may be able to join you.

On my last time to do something else beside work, here is what we attempted

My son lives in Wichita. Going out to see him is a great excuse to make this trip.

Earliest I could make it will be after 4th of July now.

I'll definitely let you know if/when it works out.
