I live in Florida. I used to fear the dreaded blue hair inna Cadillac. Not so much anymore.

When I have time and favorable conditions, there is some really nice riding to be found in the Brooksville/Dade City Pasco/Hernando area. It attracts all sorts of riders, from droning hordes of cruisers, to adventure riders, and sport bikers.

OK, there are some crashes caused by sheer stupidity and clueless riders. BUT of the 8 fatalities I saw, every single one was caused by the new menace. Distracted, mentally overloaded, cell phoning/texting SOCCER MOM in a minivan crossing over the line in a corner.

Blue hairs are a problem usually because of backing up traffic, which leads to a different kind of crash where an impatient person tries to pass 8 vehicles at once because the blue hair is running 35 in a 55.

Anybody that crosses the centerline causing a fatal crash needs to be charged with manslaughter at the very least. Rant over.

RIP. Sorry for my comments below when we should be focusing on the Officer and the sadness it brings, but I will make it quick.



Many people want driving retesting for seniors, and some say retesting for young drivers. I've always thought that everybody should have to retest every 4 years (which includes a written test AND driving test). Our society is somewhat crazed if we think that everyone can retain skills for 50+ years without some sort of retraining or retesting, especially when that skill involves driving 2+ ton objects.

I think if you go back and look at the stats that were posted, you'll see that older folks aren't a big problem overall.

If you think that everyone needs retraining, it might be that your own personal horizons are limited and you can't see past them. I certainly don't need it, and I know plenty of others who don't, either. What's needed is better initial training and graduated licensing.

Law enforcement needs to change its priorities and start citing bad and distracted drivers instead of using speeding as a cash cow. Being a stupid driver should be expensive. Just about every cop car has a dash cam, and now, the officers are beginning to wear cameras as well, so having evidence at trial is possible.

They could make a lot of revenue just ticketing themselves! A LOT of cops drive badly or think it's OK to drive any way they like.

That's the problem. Everyone thinks that they drive just fine, even the bad drivers. If you read my post, I never said that everyone should be retested just so we can weed out old drivers. My point was that everyone should be retested to weed out (or improve) bad drivers from the entire driving population. Yes, it would be an inconvenience for everyone, but if we were to take traffic safety seriously and proactively, we would realize the need for us to do something drastic (like retesting for everyone). Until then, traffic deaths will continue to kill an amazing amount of people per year. Sadly, we have became accustomed to our amount of traffic deaths so change will never happen as much as it should.

Depending on traffic enforcement for a cure is not a proactive, cost effective, efficient, long-term solution to significantly improve the driving population as a whole.

I am on or near the fog line when I believe there is a potential for an oncoming vehicle to pull out and pass. I will take going off the road at 60 mph over impacting an SUV at 120 mph every time.

Being over to the far right gives the potential offender a better chance of taking note of your existence.

I see lots of ass wipes out there that have no clue as to how to actually drive....it purely them and screw the rest of us. No common courtesy, No thought for anyone but them self, and certainly No responsibility for their actions.

It seems few people are objective enough when ageing, to adequately evaluate driving skills. Often the changes develop slowly, and like other demanding tasks we face, we adjust. Just like you're responsible to help your parents recognize when they should quit driving, someday your children should do the same for you. When my mom reached that point, she had every excuse, such as "I only drive in the day time" and "I don't drive in unfamiliar places". When she started hitting parked cars as she drove down her street, I knew it was time. My argument that convinced her was that that parked car could be a mother with a stroller or a family on a walk. Raleigh has a cab voucher system for elderly that provides transportation for a modest fee. Knowing that she wouldn't be giving up her independence was very important. When I took her to the DMV to exchange her license for an id, the officer asked her if she was giving her up license voluntarily or was it court ordered. She did a slow turn to me then back to him and replied "not exactly voluntary". At least she still had a sense of humor. Two months later she had a series of strokes which now requires full assisted care living. We dodged a potential disaster.
As for testing, I'm for it at any age, perhaps longer terms during younger years. Like a previous poster, I am also an airline pilot. I believe that plus motorcycle riding may help keep me on the road longer as a safe driver. I guess I'll wait and see what my daughter thinks about that down the road.

True, the data from the NHTSA shows accidents start to increase in the 60-65 year old age group. Check out Figure 6.
