Probably a good thing tho. I jumped on it, forgetting that the front caliper isn't connected (steve is sending a brake line) and the back wasn't adjusted. Rolled down the driveway and gave it gas...

Really glad it quit running at that point... I was just starting to freak out realizing my slight miscalculation.

Brakes on an XR600 are overrated

Question Brakes and a question

I got my front brakes (thanks Steve) installed and bled. Used a syringe and little hoses and finally got the air out.

Adjusted the back brakes too. Here's where I found an issue.

The rear sprocket is too big. Probably close to 55+ teeth. It has the chain going through the lower guide and coming out at an angle. It has worn through the guide to the point that the rear lower guide bolt is being hit by the chain.

Would it be ok to take the black plastic piece out of the guide and run it that way, or is the chain liable to jump if I do that? Any other recommendations?

"Buy a correct sprocket." What I figured...

On a positive note, cleaned main jets in both carbs. Left was dirty. Upon reinstall and 1 1/2 pilot jet set the bike runs well at any RPM! Got to ride around the block a couple of times. Then, brought it in, removed seat, installed new tank strap, and am in the process of shoe gooing the split seam on the seat.

Pretty much have it ready for short local rides. Still burns oil and has piston slap but better than a pile o parts and a bent frame.

Will be a good bike for casual knock around riding though still plan on piston upgrade later when money is not an issue.

Thank you Steve and Chris for parts and help.

Perfect saturday !

Final product

tail light, a set of acerbis guards (used - 2 sets off Craigslist for 20$), decent front tire, tool bag (1$ from a thrift store).

Still need my fork boots.

engine mounting bolts xl and/or xr
brake (foot) lever xl ?
wrist pin xr - (scored)
manifold gasket xl/xr
triple tree top nuts probably xl but...

front axle clamp xl/xr
wire guide under tank xl ?

My two xr600r's, both 1986, are 908 units apart on serial numbers. Thought that was kind of interesting. Probably made the same week.

Red bikes

Today I changed the front fork oil in the 2nd XR600. Then I mowed the lawn. It's spring!

I realized I have a bunch of red bikes in the garage so had to take a picture.
