Out of Province bike purchase

Does anyone know if it is possible (legal) for an Ontario resident to purchase a used bike in B.C. and ride it back to Ontario. Thanks for your advice.

Bought a bike in Alberta and did a fly and ride from Nova Scotia. When I called my insurance co they said that new purchases were automatically covered for me for a week or two, don't recall exactly. I had them email me the coverage paper work. Went into the vehicle registry in Alberta and picked up a 7 day in transit permit and that was all it took. Sadly every province is different and so you have to do a bit of digging to sort things out.

Just get a temp vehicle permit from service ontario before you go. I think you can get them up to 10 days with only having insurance info

I have done it a few times to Newfoundland. Most times I register it here and bring a licence plate with me but I have ridden home with the previous owners plate when I bought the GSA in Nova Scotia. Called my insurance company and they said no sweat just use the policy number from the KLR.

If I still had every dollar I spent on motorbikes I would be a richer man but a poorer person.

Thank you gentlemen.

"Maggot", I find this site both informative and entertaining. I don't post only because the experience/knowledge level here is much greater than mine. There is very little that I could add to most conversations or inquiries that would have any value.

Regards,
Dan

+1 on this. When I last called my insurer regarding a new (to me) bike, they said I need not even call them in advance - just make sure I get the details to them within two weeks.

Your insurer may require advance notice, but even so, a phone call and a transit permit are pretty simple. My fly and ride was a great experience.

I am hoping to find an older GS, GSPD. There have been a couple available in B.C and I thought it would be nice to fly out and ride back. Of course I'd fly to any of the provinces just seemed as if the ones listed recently have been on the west coast.
Regards,
Dan

No problems with legal but I do recall that BC was trying to change sales tax on used vehicles, even of it was a private sale. Not sure if they still are doing that???

They would collect the tax when you went to register it. Since BC and some provinces are government registration & insurance, there was no way around it. People would buy a used car for lets say 2 grand cash, then do up the paperwork and state a lot less.

Like I said, not sure if BC is still doing this, I just recall that they were.

And don't forget to check kijiji and autotrader for you hunting.

Good luck with the search.
