Salvation Mountain - AntiHero Challenge

Taking the advice of AntiHero I took last Friday off and made it a day of adventure.

Leaving San Diego I took the 8 East to 79 North which goes to Julian, Ca – old mountain-y feel.
Then on to 78 East out thru Ocotillo, Ca – beautiful desert!
From the straight shot thru the desert I hit the 78.86 East that follows the bottom tip of The Salton Sea to Westmoreland, Ca – bizarre countryside.
In Westmoreland I took S30 to Highway 111, that crossroads is a tiny town called Calipatria, Ca – Farming community.
A quick shot up the 111 North lead me to my destination of Niland, Ca – Salvation Mountain.

If you have never heard of it, or you didn't catch it in the movie Into The Wild, you should check it out. It’s a total trip.
This old guy Leonard Knight lives out there in an abandoned single-wide with no power, water, etc. and just paints this hillside with his Christian ideals.
His guestbook was signed by people from all over the WORLD. I signed beside a couple from Stockholm, Sweden. He is a man of faith and while his health is failing and he lost a leg he still takes trips from the nursing home to work on his labor of love. People donate cans of paint and money and he just keeps on going, doing what he loves and making it all work towards his happiness.
It’s not the destination they say – I think I spent an entire 15 minutes there taking photos with the Canon.

The roads leading to the destination were the point. I left an ocean-side metropolis and in 3 hours I had been thru mountains, desert, farmland, rocky canyons and the like. Popping in and out of these tiny communities where abandoned concrete slabs served as parking spots for tired old RV’s with the wheels removed. Dirty faced children playing in the roads with broken toys, hippie communes and hitchhiking wanderers… It was really a trip to remember!

Here are the photos, basically in order of my route explained above. I stopped often and took 80+ photos. My favorites below. I hope you enjoy them and that they inspire you to take a sick day, pick a destination about 4 hours away, and ride to it, then ride home. AntiHero’s thread on his PNW adventure is truly inspiring, and is the reason I made this trek.

I love the salton sea and that whole area, thanks for sharing. Did you take 111 all the way up along the east side of the sea? That's a really beautiful ride that worth it if you haven't done it and come back.

Another cool thing to check out in that area if you come back (especially on a V-strom) are mud volcanoes located here: http://goo.gl/maps/FT5ks

Somebody told me Leonard Knight died a little while back. I guess that's not the case?

Hi Hunter. i took 111 part ways but not sure how far. it was a pretty ride while i was on it.. .small town farmlands everywhere.

the mud volcanoes huh? Ill have to go see that. i have some mates that want to make that trip with me, so i'll be going again soon.

the last i heard he was in the hospice and took trips out occasionally to see his place. not 100% on that...

thanks!! B.

Sadly, Leonard is no longer with us. His art will always remind us of his indominable spirit.

Ya i saw that the morning he died. Thanks for sharing.

I'm wondering if the locals will keep his work alive or if will slowly go to ruin. It looked a little less vibrant than usual.

With all the communes around the area, I'm hoping some of his closer pals will keep ti going for him. or at least keep it "maintained" a bit...
