Circumnavigating The Salton Sea

I love ghost towns and odd places. The Salton Sea has been a place that interested me because it is a modern ghost town. There are tangible things there that have been left behind to turn to dust. On a Sunday a couple of weeks ago I got a wild hair and decided to ride out there and to ride completly around and back in one day about a 600 mile trip. Here are two vide ride reports. I hope you enjoy....

Good stuff AZ Desert Dog! I'm fascinated with the Salton Sea myself for no reason except it's a modern day environmental catastrophe that CA wants to ignore.

It's high on my "gotta go see" list. Thanks for the vids of the trip.

Awesome clips. Looks like something out of a Mad Max movie, hopefully not our future. Enjoyed your films, probably as close as I need to get.

When I lived in CA, some of the locals would tell me about water skiing in the Salton Sea when they were in high school. That was before all the oxygen bubbled out of the sea.

That would definitely be me in 1968. You could float in the water without much trying because of the salt content. It wasn't the most wonderful experience but at 18 years old who gave a crap. There were stores that sold us beer so we didn't care about the grunge.

Nice work on the YouTubes AZ Desert Dog. Thanks.

Sadly, Leonard Knight founder of Salvation Mountain (just outside Slab City) died yesterday.

Regardless of your spiritual beliefs, no trip to/around the Salton Sea is complete without stopping at Salvation Mountain, IMO.

Godspeed Mr. Knight.

Sad to hear about Leonard. I first learned about him and his work from Huell Howser's crazy show, California's Gold, for the lazy-

Kind of cheesy but he had an episode on the "Mountain".

I too can remember camping and water skiing in Salton Sea. Scary part is, this was in the mid seventies . I only remember the water looking kind of redish brown, and the smell. Like surfing in red tide. Thanks Dad, come to think of it he never got out of the boat.

I'm in NorCal now. I need to make the pilgrimage down south and check out your route. Thanks for the inspiration!!
