Can anyone provide information about security/safety in Cucuta? I'm contemplating taking a job there for two months and wondering what it's like now.

Talking Shamrock = Awesome x2!

The Shamrock in Medellin is my go-to place. If they don't have a room, they have a suggestion for one.. Al and Al are superstars with good bike repair advice, connections and will send you exactly where you need to go. No drama. AND it's very close to motorcycle repair row.. there is a whole street or four full of moto shops and services.
Huge props to my buddies there.. every time, a super success.
Thanks guys!

Hola Bert, I am Juan, from Bogotá.

From Medellín to Cartagena is a loooooonnnnggggg trip. I have done several time on motorbike, bus, car, truck..... Alone, with my children, etc....

From Medellín you have to go down towards the Cauca river, thru an road that we call "Ventanas". Area is relative safe but is better just to go down and out of the region. But be aware that the road is very curly and demanding.

So from Medellín to Montería is about 8 hours. Nowadays there is a hotel before entering Montería, you see it from the road on your left, and it's called LINDA PALMA. Not sure if there is any indication in guide books as the hotel I fairly new. I have stayed there a couple of times.

Look for it on the Web or Facebook.

Or in Montería, there are several hotels but they are crap. In general hotels in Caucasia and Planeta Rica are crap.

From Montería to cartagena, big trip, it's hot, it's humid, do not get tired.

One recommend place is on the Morrosquillo Gulf, a place called EL GOLFO BUCEO Y VERANO, a very quiet love some hotel in the Morris Quillota North end. It's still far away but is worthy. From Montería is about 8 hours, and from it to cartagena is about 3 hours. http://www.elgolfobuceo.com/

You can rent an indoor parking, you can rent an storage place, or you can leave at my place. All we can help.

Just le me know.

Hola Juan!

This is excellent information! Thanks for taking the time. I looked at a map and Hotel Linda Palma seems to be in a Planeta Rica. Can you confirm this is the same place?

Thanks again, Friend!

Yes is the same place. Montería and Planeta Rica are relatively close by. It is good hotel had a swimming pool someone can stretch the bones.

Food is standard Colombia country side mountain food. Get there and you will figure out what that means. Do not forget to try the juice of zapote, a tropical fruit with supposed aphrodisiac powers, popular en the region.

I was talking in to my wife about Ventanas, the road coming down from Medellín. As I said to you, the road is curly, crazy, and cumbersome. Lots of traffic, big trailer trucks some times get the road blocked. Bring water and snacks. One time we were there for 3 hours.

But she also pointed out that, although is a fairly safe road, one should not stop too much on it. The area is kinda Gooffy Colombian "quiet" civil unrest region. She has police information bc of her job. When we go with our children we also are careful.

Just ask if need more info about other things, my email is Jmvalderrama@yahoo.com. Will be glad to help.

Columbia Recommendations

My wife and I will be swinging by the Shamrock in Medellin tomorrow. Any other places/people/roads to see on our way towards Quito? Had a blast in Cartagena and already love Colombia*.

Thanks,
-Brian
