It's all about what you want to ride and how hard you are willing to pound that square peg.

Last summer, I had a '78 GL1000 cafe bike (don't worry, I built it up from a wreck instead of chopping down a clean original, not that GLs are particularly rare or valuable anyway), a '00 ZRX1100, a '94 GL1500 project, and a '96 DR350SE. I still have the project and the 350. I might move to a DR650 this year, but I really have a blast on the little tree fiddy and so far I haven't found anything to ask of it that it wouldn't do (Except 85 MPH ).

Knowing what I now know and how I now ride, I'd sell off the KLX650 and put a 351 kit in the KLX250.

Its all about compromise and every one has a opinion on what they are willing to trade for What suits them . Over all I think the Dr/kLR/xr/650s are about as rounded as you can get for the money . If I had to build a bike for some one that wanted a do every thing bike I would most likely take a wee strom engine and try to build a lighter more off road friendly frame and body around it with a upgraded suspension and 5 gal or better fuel tank , I would think that would cover a lot of bases.

My personal compromise was a super sherpa because Im a noob so I wanted something that was light , low, able to ride non super slab with out problem, good on gas I didn't care if for 2 up or interstate cruising . If would have wanted those things I would have went with a 650

Well, I guess if I had to choose...

I'd keep mine, and sell hers. Oh, she'd probably complain, but with my helmet on and bike running, I wouldn't be able to hear much.

It would depend on whether I had to use it for work. If I could keep the car, it would be a KTM 690 with the Rally Raid kit. I suppose that, technically speaking, I could put hard bags on that and use it for work too. 600 mile days might be a bit much on it though...

If it was my one and only vehicle, then I have it, my 1150GSA.

Only 1?...

Had bunches of bikes through the years...now at 56, I'm trying to 'simplify' my world and am riding an XR650R that's plated for offroad and dualsport, and I have an '08 Concours 14A for runnin' cross country. The distances are huge out west, still, I'm amazed at how the XR is a great 'jack of all trades'...a great offroad mount as long as it's not technical singletrack...great dual-sport bike when set up correctly, it's a better road bike than a VTX1800C I once had, and it's more reliable than a sledgehammer. I stopped for a burger in town recently before leaving for the back county for the day on the XRR, and a young guy came up to me in a parking lot and asked, "Isn't that thing illegal on the highway?..." I smiled and showed him the plates. He replied, "Well, it 'ought' to be illegal!" and smiled. I love riding the thing on pavement, but it's forte is offroad for sure.

While I lust for an 800cc adventure bike, I know if I had to, I could do anything I really want to on the XR...it gets my vote today. (Would post some pics of mine if I could figure that out!...)
