The gps file for this route, and many others, can be found on Cannon's website Cannonshot.net

North from Iron Mountain to Copper Harbor and back is a nice ride also. Don't forget to go to Brockway Mountain for a fantastic view of Lake Superior.

Excellent

Subscribed.
I actually have spent more time on trails in the U.P. on dog sled than on a bike. Looking forward to some great rides.

Parking

Are there any recommendations for safe and legal overnight parking for my truck near the eastern side of the UP route? We're planning on doing a 4-5 day loop.

Contact one of the many motels in St. Ignace. If you stay there for a night, some will often let you park in their lot while you are out on the trail. I think I may have waypointed a motel in St Ignace in that GPS file where I have taken some groups to stay on CannonTreks. Give them a call. By the way, a lot of those motels aren't open yet this season.

I just checked the file. Pines Motel would be a good place to start.

You may also have luck w/ one of the ferry operators based in St Ignace or Mackinaw City (if you would like to ride over the Mighty Mac) Arnold Line, Scheplers or Star Line - they have large lots with different security options for those who visit Mackinac Island

Thanks for the great advice, guys. I'll be going in early May so I've got some time to make some phone calls and make arrangements. Maybe I'll see you out there.

I live in marquette during the summers so if anyone is passing through and wants a couch to sleep on or a cold microbrew at blackrocks, feel free to send me a PM!

I'm not a meteorologist by any stretch but thought for planning purposes you should know, the U.P. winter of 13/14 has been one of epic lore. Almost every flake of snow that fell starting in November is still on the ground burried under another 7-10'. In addition the average temp this winter was 7.5 degrees driving the frost line well past 6' deep. So what I'm getting at it is there is a really good chance the U.P. will still have some snow on the ground in early May. And almost certainly there will be more than usual standing water in areas like the high water truck trail in the Seney. Also Lake Superior was completly frozen over this winter which means the worlds largest swamp cooler will be kicking cool breezes for the majority of the summer so pack a sweater. Oh and one last thing, we are getting another 9-15" this weekend. All that said, don't miss an opportunity to ride the U.P. as one thing is certain it will be a memorable Adventure.

Heed the advice about not going in early May this year. You won't have a good trip.

A large group of us are shooting for late July this year. We did it back in '11 and I can't wait to do it again

Just got back from snowmobiling the Grand Marais to Seney area... Unless there's an epic change you WON'T even be able to ride a motorcycle in the beginning of May... The snow is awesome it's still, as of April 5th waist deep at the minimum and armpit deep in the woods being the norm....

Three of us are doing this ride in the end of June and I have to say there's a damn good chance, scratch that, there will be, snow in the woods in spots in June...
