Can You Change the Front Spark Plug Without Pulling the FI???

As the title states "Can You Change the Front Spark Plug Without Pulling the FI???" It is a 2010 990 Adventure. I adjusted the valves at 7,xxx and was going to change the plugs at that time, but realized the spare plugs for my 2007 would not fit. The moto now has 15,600 miles on it and I don't plan on checking the valves till at least the 20-25 thousand mile mark. How long have y'all ran the OEM plugs? What number Iridium plugs are y'all using? Thanks!

I've gone 20K+ miles on a set of plugs. I replaced them for the heck of it around 20,000 miles but they showed no signs of deterioration. That shouldn't be a problem.

I can do it on a 950. It's tight but doable.

Just done it on my 990 SMT

Its very tight but can be done if you take out the radiator mounting bolts and push the radiator over and down, also remove the breather pipe from the airbox and pull it down through the frame, it gives a little more room for your hand.

Also wind some sticky cloth tape ( or duct tape on backwards ) onto your 3/8" extension bar for the spark plug socket, makes it a lot easier to turn the bar with oily hands.

It will only take about a week for the scratches on the back of your left hand to heal up

yes you can do it from the right side, it does help to remove radiator bolts to be able to push the top out for a little extra room.

I've given up on trying to do this simply on my 950. I pop off the tanks and high front fender and then remove the radiator. Then you have free access to the front plug. To me, this is preferable to removing carbs and then accessing the plug in between the trellis frame.

what's the factory recommended interval for plugs?

on an EFI engine I wouldn't bother changing it till 25k.

My 2010 manual says to change them every 15,000km or 9321mi. The part number is LKAR8BI9. They are hard to find and they are an Iridium plug. The reason they have the same life as a conventional plug is because ONLY the center electrode is iridium, so the ground electrode still wears...
Having said that, I just took mine out after 15,000 miles and they look just like my new ones.
Theres a few sets on Amazon right now.

I already have a pair of those plugs. But $14 each sure is better than the $22 I paid! Is there a full Iridium Plug available? I had those in my 2007 and was only planning to change them every 30,000 miles when I checked the valves.

I will check the valves again at 20,000 - 25,000 miles and will wait to change the front plug then. Maybe by the time I do the next check after that, the full Iridium plugs will be available.
