I dig the dragons! And the ride report too!

I'm a graphic artist, I just did a BIG job with (with help from a couple ladies who are much more talented than I) and I have not been paid yet , apparently the university is trying to stiff the contractors I did the work for, so we, in turn are getting the shaft. Do you ever have that problem with mural work?

Oh man, three months of work down the drain, that's brutal! I haven't had an opportunity to do a mural yet, I mostly do my own stuff or commission work for individuals. I ask for payment up front, so I haven't had to deal with that problem yet. Ugh! I hope that the contractors you did the work for had a written contract with the university? It'll be tied up in litigation but at least they'll eventually win.

The worst I tend to get is Endless Revision Request Hell. Not nearly as bad...

The hard work comes before and after. Before to land a job, afterwards to get the money.
All in between is game and fun, because that's your raison d'etre. That was my experience.
Charging triple is the way to go.

Fortunately the press release was incorrect about the time it took. I spent two weeks on the spartans, and two weeks on the rest of the game lines/stain and graphics. I got paid for the other part (as an employee), just not the mural portion, as I was working as a sub-contractor on that particular logo. Usually the stuff I do is giant "color by numbers" and I don't get to be very creative , even though I've done some pretty high profile, cool looking floors. The mural portion was a nice change (although the drawing we had to replicate was kinda lame) and I got to learn some new techniques from two very talented ladies. I hope they get paid soon.

Anyway, sorry to highjack your thread, I like your style. Back to the regularly scheduled program

I was actually thinking about you too yesterday, was wondering how things were going. Life treating you well? Are you going to be doing any more travels on the bike or have you settled down (on purpose or reluctantly) for the time being?

Still very much for whatever you have in store or have been up to lately!!

Does she carry a phone, or have an email that she checks regularly?

Anyone have any contact information?

I have her number, but the last time I sent her a message she didn't reply, so it might be an obsolete number. I"ll try again

Hey! Still in Portland, still doing art. Not much has changed.

Art isn't paying much yet (but it is starting to!) so I don't think I'd be able to budget wise... Canada has a hate-on for my freewheeling ways too so I know I'd be stopped at the border for a not-so-random check and would either need to prove steady employment or a several thousand-dollar bankroll for them to let me in.

I wish I could though! That sounds like a blast!

Things have been going pretty slowly, but I am moving in the right direction. I spent this last week designing myself a logo and creating an Etsy store which I haven't yet announced, but I already got my first customer, so that's an ego boost!

I do plan on doing more travels on the bike, but I don't think I'll be going very far this summer. I want to turn my art into a business that I can sustain myself with, so I am no longer beholden to other people for my income. With the way the economy is right now, seeing so many of my friends without work, and knowing that if I spend a few months at a job to save up money, I am not gaining anything more permanent, it feels like a good time to reinvest in myself and my own skills and create something I can take with me anywhere.

Sorry about that! I've got a number of very large projects which are taking up a significant amount of time, so I haven't had much space for small stuff in my schedule. I've been working hard to try to turn a profit, so not much time for personal art either. This will change once I get those things out of the way. :)

I'm still at the same number (though I'd rather not post it publically), I did get your text, but when I checked them it was two in the morning and I didn't want to disturb your sleep. Sorry for not replying!

Investing in Self is always a good thing. Even should you be barely able to make ends meet, you'll be doing so with complete autonomy. That's worth a lot.
