Lc8 with too much oil?

Adv 990 with too much oil, is it a big issue or not? When I did my oil change I put too much.

Both my 950 and 990 would push oil out the breather if overfilled. Easy enough to suck out excess through filler cap

FWIW

Yes you can damage the engine by overfilling, best drain some oil out.

Your only overfilling the oil tank - it's a dry sump motor.

+1 Yep it will make a mess if it overflows the tank but won't hurt anything.

The only caveat is that if the check valve is bad on the bottom of the tank it will fill up the crankcase, I haven't tried to see how much volume the LC8 case has in it.. I check my oil before I start riding for the day/week, so if the check valve was bad the tank would be empty.. But the scavenger section of the oil pump will empty the motor back to the tank in about 2 seconds..

http://www.dansmc.com/4_stroke_oilpump.htm <- Nice little writeup on bike oiling systems if you've never looked at a dry sump it clears up how they work.

Yeah, this is an important topic. I recently bought a 990, and before riding I always check the oil level. It's been at the half way mark on the stick. After reading the owners manual, it states that one should check the oil after the engine is warm....? WTF? So I did, and the the oil level was at the top mark on the stick. I need to understand how this can be..... It'd be really easy to overfill the reservoir, by filling to the top mark with a cold motor.

I look at it as don't top it up or check it when the motor is cold. The manual states do this when it's warm so stick to the manual and you Cann't go wrong
wrong. If you over fill it why tare a chance on wheater it can cause damage or not. Drain it to the correct level.

Lads have different opinions about it as you can see above but who's right. I wouldn't be taking a chance.
