Great conditions today. Plenty of ruts to keep you focused, dirt slightly wet. New Dunlops felt great.

Looking to do a ride from Morgan Valley Rd to 16 Via Rayhouse tomorrow, anyone know if its open, or if its ok to just do it if the gate is closed. I'm coming from Fairfax so a long trip for a bust. PS if it is or anyone knows a cool route around that part and wants to join PM me.

Gate was closed and locked on 4-14. Have not been back since. But if the gate is closed, do not assume it's locked. In March is was unlocked and easily pushed open.

The lower trail workaround is OK for bikes up to about 650 singles. Larger/wider bikes can do it but it will be more...uhmmmm...challenging.

Best to do this with a helper on the uphill bit if you have a big trailie.

After that you're good all the way to HWY 16. The other end is just riding around some K-rail. No gate.

Let us know what you found.

It's wide open.

Badass is what it is.

Popped a little wheelie over it and that was the end of that saga.

GREAT RIDE.

Today's ride on a WR250R from the east end, snowing at the first ridge where we decided to turn around.

Question

Thanks for the videos! Be careful riding past the signs that clearly state "No motor vehicles." Tracks going around the signs are what state officials look for when trying to justify shutting a place like this totally down.

Does anyone know if the gate is currently open? I'm planning on riding over Rd 40 / Rayhouse Rd / Reiff Rd next weekend with a friend. He'll be on a GS, so I don't really want to get all the way over the pass and back down, just to find a locked gate.

Thanks!

Gate was closed on the BARF ride last Sunday. We were able to get a GS around the gate on the low (left side if riding west to east) side using two spotters. It looks a bit scary but is possible. Might be a bit steeper going the other direction.

Thanks for the quick response. I might head out there one of these days (I live in Woodland) and check it out before the ride. Either way, I'll report back what I find.

Regards,
KW

Gate was open the last few rides.

But haven't been there for about 3 weeks. It's always a bit chancey.

Have an alternate route planned.

Made it out here Sunday with my friend on his XR650L, and me on my Ural. West gate was open. Slow going on the sidecar, lots of bumps that you float over on a motorcycle will hurt a bit on the Russian! But, she made it all the way through with no drama. Coming up out of Buck Island campground, I had to use 2WD in anger - and she climbed right out like a good little goat after abusing the clutch just a little. I've had the Ural for a few years, and it just keeps making me smile. I always expect it to overheat and give up on those long first gear slogs up the rough stuff, and it just won't quit. It keeps on making the same bag of nails noises that it did when I bought it, but hasn't let me down yet.

Interesting tidbit - we found that it is just possible to squeeze it through the Highway 16 (east side) gate, with about three inches to spare! Still no good way around the west side gate if it's locked, though.
