Mount Wilson National Back Country Byway

Here's the map. Eastern Nevada, near Pioche. Look at Benchmark for more detail.

My dad and I stayed at the Overland Hotel. Spent two days in the area. One day on motos, the other hiking.

The Kokopelli room is more like a mini-suite. Turned out to be very quiet and a nice change of pace from the cookie-cutter motel. The Overland Hotel has an interesting history. Stop in if you are on the main street of Pioche.

Lounge area and one of two beds, all for $70.

The start of the Mount Wilson Back Country Byway. Corner of #322 and #93 in Pioche. Lower end of old mining tramway in background.

We get stopped for a bit of road construction. Making friends with the flag guy. He used to work in California, relocated to Nevada. He commented on the lower cost of living.

We deviate from the "official" scenic byway a bit to go by Echo Canyon State Park. On the way we see another Adams Leaning Wheel Grader by the side of the road. Score! This one is pulled by a tractor, looks like it is still in occasional use. Lots of clever technology that has endured the test of time.

Small reservoir at Echo Canyon State Park.

Locals with a sense of humor. 75 mph on the dirt.

And the neighborhood "Attack Bunny"

Most of the roads are smooth gravel and/or packed dirt. Almost no ruts. Very easy riding.

My dad enjoying the scenery.

Entering Spring Valley State Park.

Spring Valley State Park. Eagle Valley Reservoir. Kind of like a miniature Lake Mead.

Typical scene in Spring Valley, just north of the reservoirs.

Lots of water and lush grass for the cattle.

We stop for lunch at one of the state park campgrounds. Always good to find the shade.

Old stone houses.

Pioneer-era cemetery.

Gravestones.

Date of death = 1870.

Another old gravestone.

Some signs. The Mount Wilson Byway follows the "main" dirt road. Relatively easy if you have a reasonable sense of direction.

Mirror shot.

Dad taking a few pics of me.

We always ride near each other, often playing a version of "leap frog" as we stop and start for photo ops.

The road circumnavigates Mount Wilson. There is a different road that actually goes to the summit. Lots of FAA communication towers.

WRR on the backside of Pioneer Pass, heading back down to the valley.

Little salute to the sticker.

Always good to ride with Dad.

Action photo.

Finishing the route across Lake Valley with Holt Farm in background. Almost back to pavement at Highway 93.

The end point. It's about 25 miles back to Pioche on Highway 93. Loop is roughly 100 miles. All of it is worthwhile, but the state parks are the best.

We spent most of the next day hiking and taking photos in Cathedral Gorge State Park.

As always, thanks for riding along!

Cathedral Gorge

Camped at Cathedral Gorge Tuesday through Thursday of this past week.
We went South of Caliente to Rainbow Canyon for a little diversion.
Now I'll have to go back for Mt. Wilson. Thanks for the post.

WOW!

Who knew?

RRR does it again, bringing geography and geology to many of us that never knew it was even there.

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Local ADVer in truck accident on Hwy 18 N of St George

This morning a late model Chevy Sierra pickup was involved in a near head on collision with a Nissan Frontier which crossed into the opposing traffic. The driver of the Chevy came out of it with only a few minor cuts, a tribute to the seat belts and front and side airbags in the truck. I talked to the driver of the Chevy (on the left in the 4th pic). He saw my Kennedy Meadows, California ADV t-shirt and said he was a fellow ADVer. I offered him a ride home and any help he might need but he decided to go with the tow truck.
Said he was from Southgate area of St George I believe. Hope you are ok, brother - check in if you can. The offer of help is still open. I'm sure I can speak for your fellow ADVers in wishing you well and the others involved who were injured.

Rest assured RRR - many of us check in on a regular basis, even though we don't have much to contribute.
The trails are open and the roads are clear, trees are almost completely in leaf and the grass needs attention every 5 days or so.

Thanks for the continued effort and terrific reports!

Yes Vikingtazz, I'm one of "those people"

Not much to contribute except, cool Vulcan! I just ordered a Mustang seat yesterday because the stock seat was killing wife and I riding any longer than 1 hr with no breaks.
If I had multiple bikes like some people (RRR), , no way could I afford the Mustang seat. I'm working on retiring early like you, my friend. 27 now, 45 is my goal (at least semi-retired...). Tips appreciated

Thanks for the pictures of the ride up around Pioche! Looks like "home" for sure - even though I've lived somewhere else about twice as long as I lived in the Ely area growing up.

Did you hear anything about the shape of the road up to the top of Mt. Wilson while you were out and about?

Didn't hear anything about the road to the top of Mount Wilson, but I suspect it is in very good shape. Lots of FAA towers on the top of Mount Wilson. All of the Scenic Backway was in very good shape . . . would have been passable on my Versys, but probably not so good for the Vulcan.

Page, AZ

Rode out to Page a few days ago. Out via Jacob Lake, back via Kanab. Highlight was the late afternoon views of Lake Powell. Here are the pics.

Started out by driving past Quail Reservoir. Looks good.

Also Sand Hollow Reservoir.

Favorite street in Hurricane. Green trees match the bike quite nicely.

Very windy. Dust devils as I approach Fredonia.

All your basic necessities available in Fredonia.

Still very windy. At the viewpoint on 89A above House Rock. Distant view to the Vermilion Cliffs.

Excellent moto road and very scenic. The bridge across Soap Creek.

Short stop near the Cliff Dwellers Lodge.

The famous Navajo Bridge.

Bridge with Vermilion Cliffs in background.

View from the bridge. Marble Canyon and the Colorado River.

The standard route to Page . . . Route 89 . . . is still closed.

Detour a bit further south. Just means more riding time.

Turn back north at Gap. Well marked detour.

North on Navajo #20.

Previously dirt . . . this is 100% brand new beautiful asphalt.

The map. The yellow highlighted #20 is all new pavement . . . ready for your riding pleasure. Gap (gas station) is at the southern end of #20.

Local cows aren't used to much traffic. They're not quite sure what to make of me.

The source of the water. Very interesting to travel along a brand new paved road. Easy access to some off-the-beaten path type places.

As you descend towards Page there are big views of the Navajo Generating Station.

More views with Navajo Mountain in the background.

Twisty roads for the Versys near Antelope Point Marina.

View of Lake Powell from near Glen Canyon Dam.

Versys up high at the Wahweap viewpoint.

Wahweap Marina and Lake Powell.

The big view.

Very popular at sunset. I wasn't alone . . . but I was the only moto.

Thanks for riding along!
