KTM 1190 Adventure Insurance (california)

Hi Guys,
Hoping to bite the bullet on an 1190 in Aug/Sep. Got a quote for insurance with AAA (same coverage as what I have for my '12 DL650).

They want $611/year for the 50k/100k comprehensive with $500 deductible for comprehensive and $1000 deductible for collision and 3.5k miles / year (verified so it keeps shifting up and down). This is after good driver, loyalty, garage, etc, discounts.

Does that seem right for California or should I start shopping around? If so, any recommendations?

Thanks!

Not Cali, but Flo at Progressive quoted me $271/year for full coverage, $1,000 deductible, in Tennessee. This was about a month ago, when I was planning to buy the next day. Never did buy the 1190, tho.

I have three autos insured with AAA so I got a quote from them, they contract with American Modern for motorcycle insurance. The quote was $720 for a 250K/500K policy with a $500 deductible. My driving record is perfect, I have taken the safety course, and I'm 49 years old. While the progressive motorcycle show was in town I went to get some earplugs made and ended up talking with the various insurance folks.

Ended up talking with an Allstate rep and he assured me American Modern would be sky high. Called him the following Monday and bought a policy. The same coverage with Allstate is costing me $377, no brainer! I also added another million dollar umbrella policy, so total I'm back around the American Modern number, but I have much more coverage and the umbrella policy cover my autos, home and my wife as well. Didn't really want to spend that much, but mega insurance was the wifes criteria for letting get back into riding and buy my new 1190 Adventure R

I ended up sticking with AAA for $610/year, 50k/100k, $500 deductible for comp and collision (dealership required the $500 deductible for me to ride the bike off the lot).
The problem according to an insurance agent seems to be my zip code. The area I live in is good, but the zip code is part of LA County. Buddy of mine who lives in Ventura County (Thousand Oaks and closer to LA than me!) is paying $400 for the same bike with Allied (not sure what his coverage is). My quote with Allied was over $1k!

The bummer about AAA is you don't get multi-motorcycle discounts, so until I sell my DL650 I'm paying over $1k in total motorcycle insurance. You should also factor in needing a AAA membership if you don't have one, which adds $40-75 to your yearly bill.

Once the high of the new bike wears off, I'll spend some more time searching for better rates.

PS. The above is with a clean driver records, no accidents, no points, mid 30s and licensed for 15 years.

I'm in Colorado and I use Geico for two vehicles and two motorcycles. I pay 425.00 a year for full coverage on the 1190 R with a 1000.00 deductible.

I shopped around a few years back and Progressive came in with the lowest price. I have CostCo and they referred to Progressive for the motorcycle insurance, and I did a comparison with Geico and USAA as well.

Factors vary widely, but the most expensive part is the UMI (under or un-insured motorist coverage).

For example:

2013 BMW F800GS Engine displacement: 798 cc's

$100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident $50,000 each accident == $45
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist $100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident == $231
Medical Payments $2,500 each person == $56
Comprehensive Total Loss $750 == $17
Collision Total Loss $750 == $78
Accessory Coverage $3,000 included
Roadside Assistance == $10

Total premium for 2013 BMW $437

2013 KTM 500 EXC Engine displacement: 500 cc's

$100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident $50,000 each accident == $28
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist $100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident == $151
Medical Payments $2,500 each person == $60
Comprehensive $1,000 == $17
Collision $1,000 == $36
Accessory Coverage $3,000 included
Roadside Assistance == $10

Total premium for 2013 KTM $302

2013 KTM 250 XC Engine displacement: 250 cc's

$100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident $50,000 each accident == $23
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist $100,000 each person/$300,000 each accident == $98
Medical Payments $2,500 each person == $39
Comprehensive $1,000 == $16
Collision $1,000 == $12
Accessory Coverage $3,000 included
Roadside Assistance == $10

Total premium for 2013 KTM $198

But for $800, I can insure three motorcycles, so shop around! :)
