Eek Stop the INSANITY!

Ok. Please, please, for the love of god stop posting these airhead dirtbike pics. I kept reading about them, thinking about modifying mine, and then I realized i'm too goddamned short to ride a dirtbiked GS. I'm turning green w. envy. I find myself daydreaming about dropping wayyyyyy to much cash to modify my bike until I can no longer ride it.Phases like: "you don't really need to be able to touch the ground, just balance on the pegs at stop lights" and "you've got good ankles; you can just jump off and run beside it when you need to park" run though my head. so please, for the sake of a fellow advrider , stop posting these pics, the drool is ruining my keyboard

Short guys too.

As long as you have lots of open desert, there is no reason a lil' guy couldn't ride one. Just don't try to ride up a steep hill in the rocks dodging trees--makes me feel really short, really fast and I'm 6'2".

i'm 5'8" but i've got legs that a kind person would describe as "stumpy" (28 inch inseam). It's OK tho, i'm less tempted to spend the next 6 months of grocery money on front forks.

Looks good but do you think the Jig is strong enough to stop twisting when welding??

I intended using 8mm steel plate for my jig.

What tyre (tire) size were you running on the back??

Breif Version

Well there are a few things to consider.

The twin shock swingarm was my preference due to Final Drive ratio options

What tyre size are you wanting to run?

Can you get that tyre in the centre of the bike?
Some of the conversions I have seen have them off to one side by 5 -10 mm 1/2 inch or more.

Do you want to run twin shocks or single shock?

I am going to run a single WP shock of a KTM i have on the shelf.

How much travel do you want? 300mm (12 inches)?

Once you have this worked out you can start building your Jig to extend the swingarm.

Make a Jig up for the swingarm in the stock position and make it strong!!
There will be a lot of force on the swingarm to 'pull' during welding
Allowing for the swingarm to be extended to desired length.

Basically you then have to remove the webing/ Bracing from the swingarm.
Then cut it Just above the cutout for the wheel on the shaft cover (RHS)
Later model swingarms look easier to modify



Then weld in the new section. Might be good to use another swingarm for the same material then brace accordingly.

Take your shaft to a drive shaft company with a good reputation. Have them cut and extend the shaft by the same as your extension (100mm)

First This is all for a R11Engine that i want to build, hopefully that is not a sacriligio

the Rim will be a 18" by 3.75" I beleive from a R11R from wheel, so the tyre will be at the most a 150MM Karro with really spikky knobs

10 will do just fine,i don't think i need more than that, I just need very progresive action so the travel is more useful.

I'm scare to use the cast aluminum of the estock BMW swingarms, i remenber seeing somewere a guy that cut and paste a section of tube on a stock swingarm(for sure very easy) but the possiblity of a weld fracture scares me far to much, specially after the swingarm failure on my KTM 950 two years ago..

that part is easy, i can get that done in not time, the part that scares me is how to make the cone, the final drive pivot points and also the half moon shape cut at the swingarm to ake the wheel fit..


thanks for taking the time to explain the whole process...oh oviuslly this will be a single sided swingarm

Mind if I use it . . . . .

The rocker Ratio of the linkage is the hard part but obviously doable. I have seen these slung up under the spine, similar to cantilever style but with a pivot like yours.

You could make a trellis style single sided swingarm in Chrome Molly mmmmm

I was thinking about Chrome Molly swingarm on a Road Bike I had an idea about. R100RS motor in a Yamaha R1 Frame with R1100GS swingarm. But went for the Adventure bike route. It does fit in . . . but the centre line of the rear wheel didnt line up

whatever is mine is yours..

a few years back (year 1999/2000 or something) i was going crazy with the idea of making a modular frame for the R11 engines, (this is before or almost before the 1150 was release)

here are the rest of the concepts, just don't get a stroke or something wrost..

all this drawing were made out with out scale or any other tools more than a compass so some of the proportions are kind of funny..
if you want to see the full resolution files be my guess

this is my own version of the HP2 in 1999 with a half and half, Telelever fork with a up-side down fork inside of it for the really heavy stuff (oviuslly far to heavy but a cool concept none the less.) the side panels from the tank to the cilinder head are sliding protectors in case of a crash like a snow shovel and also are so soppose to duct the air into the cilinder heads to increase the cooling capacity and keep you legs warm also if you want too, ussing a adjustable flap


the Boyscout dream,, same Mainframe (like on the first picture of the linkage but a complete diferent subframe able to carry bags ans heavy loads


then is my own version of a cafe bike, simple city bike


and then My own Paris-dakar racer with the same type front end and a aluminum subframe that works also as a spare tank with details like the blue trim on the tank that serves as a handle just in case you need to lift the bike from a ditch or something and a bash plate with extra storage that follow the shape of the cilinders so the are protected and nothing really gets cut on a branch or something if you crash letting the bike slide freelly until stops with less risk of damage do to a sutten stop.


and here is a drawig made in the year two thousend base on the rumors of the KTM950 with a bicycle rack just for fun.

that bike is totally awesome..

i have dreams about something like that for years, just to find a nice, delta box or perimetral frame what will fit on top of the R291engine and call it the day...

did you go any farder with it...!?!?
I will love to see the end result for sure..

By the timne I worked out the mods to make it all fit and line up it got a bit hard. Thats when I thought about a trellis swingarm. Might just design that for a bit of fun . . .

I was also leaning towards a Adventure Bike. So fell on the back burner

Still have the frame and stuff. Sold the swingarm.
It would be possible to fit the 1100/1150 Oilhead engine Gearbox and backend into the R1 Frame. You just have to make a few trimmings.

Might get around to it one day . . .

After I finish the 'Wolfenfighter'
