Portland to Wallowa Lake

Route from Portland to Wallowa lake
About 4 days of travel.

Keep in mind, I once drove from The Dalles through Mt hood, so I have seen the area before.

Please give feedback.

Highway 224to Estacada and into the Boyz in the Hood Forest.

Take back road/dirt road to Breitenbush. Looks like the Collawash River has a dirt road. Suggestions?

Avoid Indian County and ride to Idanha or Detroit.

Take the 22 South and then turn on the 126 eastward.

Then the 20 to Bend.

It should take two days to do this.
—------------

Ride straight East to the Maury MLS and into the Ochocinco National Forest. Hopefully I can get through. Ranchers are liberal with fences in OR.

FIND the 380 and go east to Paulina and refuel. Take forest road route to Logdell.

Then to John Day.
Hopefully this is one day.

--------
Get on the 26 toward Unity, get off on the 245 and then through Dooley Mtn to Baker City. Push East on the 86 and into Oxbow Dam. Stay there for a night.
------

then North and find back roads to Joseph.
Suggestions???

-----
Fuel top offs.
Detroit???
Idanha???
Sisters???
BEND.
Paulina???
JOHN DAY
BAKER CITY
Oxbow Dam.
Enterprise???
Joseph???

More milage

Could go straight East to Hood, then take the 35 South to Bend.

More like one day from Portland to Bend, unless you're really crawling. If you don't have any real reason to go to Bend, I'd go straight to Prineville.
East on Hwy 26 about 10 miles to Mill Creek Road, signed for Wildcat Camp, turn left/North.
This turns into Road 33, at the top of the hill take a right on 3320. Goes to Rd 27, take another right to stay on 27. This goes east back to Hwy 26.
Turn Right (Southwest) on Hwy 26, go about a mile and turn left (east) on Rd 2630.
Long dirt route that has a few options, but I like Road 12, 4250, 090, 5820, 5830, 5840 and 58 to get to the South Fork John Day River.
North a mile or so to Rd 24, East until it gets to Rd 63, and goes through Logdell. If you want to skip some of paved road 63 and Hwy 395, take Rd 4920 North to 3920, and that comes back to Hwy 395. North to John Day.
I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like you could also take 4920 to 4900, and then either 48 or 49 to Mt Vernon.
If you hit the highway from there, then Prineville to Baker City would be about a day.

That gives you two days to ride around Hells Canyon and look at things, which should be pretty sweet.

Thanks for taking the time to share your route.

I will be going at a fairly slow pace.

South Central it is.

First route will be North to WA, then East to bridge of the Gods.

Then to Hood River.

Then south on the 35.

Then to the 3530 Barlow road southeast.

Then to Maupin for fuel.

That would be a full day there.

------

Backoven road to Shaniko. Then Antelope.

Tubs Springs road to Trout Creek to Prineville.
Then Bend.

Full days worth.

------

Don't have much to add in terms of route, but I noticed you're from Roanoke! I grew up there up in the mountains. What brings ya out this way?

Thanks Scott

Now I can see why you (TPJ) might be taking it easy and not blasting berms through the woods!

I am here because I decided to push the Alaskan trip one more to the right.

I was going to give up too much Oregon for the ride West and into Canada.

Location. Maupin

130 mile day yesterday.

Columbian River Gorge. The views looking South into OR were great.
I took the bridge North of Hood River over. Before doing so I topped off the Gatorade fuel cells.

I rode down the 35. And pulled off to the Barlow road. The road is a solid dualsport road.
I camped near the old Barlow road.

It was misty and sprinkling all night, but I stayed dry under trees and with the tarp.
I got lost leaving but found the 26 East, then got on the 216 East to Maupin.

Overcast and windy. Local said that was uncommon.
Got fuel, then went to the Stonebridge restaurant and bar. Neat town.

Objective today is to take the Backoven road South and go from there.

In Prineville

147 mile day.

I got turned around a couple of times.

Early morning I could not get a fix on my post with the new seven, so old Barlow road had me going up will. Damn, I want to go to the foot of Hood man.

I found tarmac and worked my way to 26.

Then rode toward Pine Grove, and then to Maupin. It was overcast and fairly windy.
Maupin is THE small town/urban package a lot of folk would love to vacation in for the summer!
I ate at the Stonebridge. Pricey, but good chicken salad. I passes a RGS parked at a diner close by, but past on stopping in to say hello. It looked like it was going to rain, plus I knew they were not about to go off road like me.

Afterwards I road to Antelope and then on the 293 for a couple of miles for the dirt road access to Ashland.
I got fooled by a dead end sign and turned North again and got back on the 293, but rallied at the 17 miles to Ashwood Sign.
Ashwood folk have a small Valley they farm. Great forest roads and Vista.
I was concerned about fences being up at the Ochoco Forest, but I got in. There were several light Creek crossings a long the way.

I was able to find a good spot under some pine trees. No other campers around.

I got started late this morning 1048. And was down for the night at 2140.
