The simplest to carry is the Benchmark atlas. It shows fairly reliable 4wd routes with hard and easy indications. Many of the PCQ trails do not follow the Benchmark highlighted routes. Because almost the entire way passes through National Forest, their maps are the best. One for each of 20 forests at about $8 each and some (many) are out of date.

No easy answer.

I try to keep the latest version posted on GPSXchange.com on both PCQ thread and in California as part of the SMTS Route 3.

I haven't been on West side of the sierras since the 90's and plan on doing it this Spring.

Rick, I opened my big mouth again and invited a bunch of friends to ride it north from Tehachapi to Hwy 4 this fall. So it is a dirty job but some one has to do it.

Just found my old roll charts from 94 (before GPS) for a trip from Ridgecrest to Tioga then down PCQ to Kernville and back to Ridgecrest.

I know some roads were closed by Travel Management but I will start with them in a month or so.

Countdown, thank you for creating and sharing this! Exactly what I was hoping to find when I started searching this morning.

I just finished a major trip via pavement, and (after realizing how much I missed out on), swapping out for dirt+road. Would this route be a serious problem for a first-time dirt rider on a KLR 650? I'll be taking it slow, learning, enjoying. Looks perfect to me!

Thanks for the input.

I consider the KLR a small Adv Bike but could be used on trails by an expert. Intermediate rider taking all the Adv bypasses KLR is fine but I have doubts about 1st time dirt rider on any long dirt trip. Perhaps plan for a day at a time and see how comfortable you are.

Ok, good to know. I'm looking into taking some classes nearby to jump start things as well. There ought to be some bunny-trails nearby to me as well, get a feel for the bike. Thanks for the advice!

it's a lot of miles without you having a lot of miles of experience.
i'm settling back into my first PDB in 32 years... while i had about 7
years of most every weekend, that's long gone.... starting at zero,
for most practical aspects.

i'd start with some day rides, and not string too much together for
the first six months or so of regular riding. if i started out doing
200 mile days, i think by the third one, it'd lose it's charm a bit.

Countdown suggested, on another thread, riding the GWT and PCQ as a loop. Great idea but it will take some time. More than a month. Sounds like a great plan for 2015, leaving AZ in mid June to miss the Monsoons and fingers crossed that the snow up north is passable. Need to do this one!

Home after three days on the trail riding from Graeagle to Chester.

Rode most of the Plumas Backcountry Discovery Trail but much of it just added mileage with nothing special so took a few short cuts.
These new sections and a few other alternatives will be posted on GPSXchange.com as PCQ 9-14
