There used to be some uncomfortably deep ruts as you get closer to Show Low. Maybe they are gone now. It just was a little inconvenient when you met oncoming traffic.

And one time when we rode it, they had just dumped about 4" of fresh lava rock the last 8-10 miles before Show Low. That was well into the unpleasant regime.
Rode Rim Rd most of the way out to Show Low this past weekend, the ruts are still there but so long as you ride between them or on either side no biggie.

you can actually take it all the way around the south end of rainbow lake,,, though its really just stringing streets and stuff together, ive done that and its all dirt.

however the trail runs cold after that, i have been looking for a dirt route that will take me all the way to big lake area (black river), but a fairly direct route is proving tough to do because of the rez.

sonoran i passed a 990 up there on friday,, was that you?

but, the OP is asking about the section from the west start to woods canyon lake, so,, still he's a good 40 miles from show low

Sorry I wasn't familiar with the lake he mentioned and had no idea where it was.

We have taken the Mogollon Rim road a few times over the past 5-6 years. We always come out on US 60 about 3 miles south of Show Low.

Last time we found a really nice ride thru the forest almost all the way over to Springerville.

BTW what was the "previous thread about a similar topic" - as long as I am being poked.

haha,,, dont remember exactly,,, but you made a post about the rim rd and riding it all the way to showlow,,, someone said it didnt go there and a bit of a lashing ensued to that indivual,,, i was just pokin fun at that by making the same comment to you,, thats all.

do you remember what FS you guys rode toward springerville? i know there are several FS rds through the whole area and if i can string a few together w/o going too far north that would be awesome. its one thing to pop rds together on a map, its another to find folks who have actually ridden the and can point out conditions.

thanks

Here are the tracks for that segment. The dark blue is what we actually rode. The cyan was the plan. A few roads were closed or didn't exist.

The early road segment marked Primitive was hard to find. The first part of the road was blocked by a large berm. But we just went over or around it.

We actually could have gotten to that eastern section a little further south.

But we got hit by a nasty blizzard, 40 mph winds and complete whiteout. So we bailed to the pavement early. This was early May and the snow didn't last long and didn't really cause any problems.

Tracks for the entire trip are on both dualsportmaps.com and GPSXchange.com.

Ride up to the top of Green Peak Lookout. Worth the slight detour.

Rode FR 300 today. Great views and an easy route. Most dangerous part are the campers driving in the middle of the road. Thanks to everyone for the advice
