Anyone here run aftermarket pipes and NONE of the stock adhesive heat shielding with ok results?

I ask cuz I'm replacing rear plastics (after a subframe failure) and there's about $50 worth of heat shielding. I figure since the fmf's run so much cooler, the heat shield pieces are unnecessary.

Any advice?

I had the same dilemma when I ordered new plastics. I bought the heat shields, but wish I didn't.

Just use some reflectix or foil / foam tape from home depot, etc. If you need an adhesive if not using a "tape", SealAll works great. Reflectix works great for making cooking-pot cozies too, to conserve stove fuel when rehydrating meals!

The foil / foam tape works great too under fuel tanks that dont permeate fumes. More insulative value than just foil tape, fwiw.

37k miles on my SE. 48k miles on my 950SM. Both are original and both seem to be fine.

This is true w/ no soft luggage usage or luggage used w/ racks.

However, if you use a Giant Loop or similar "rackless" luggage system, you'll want shielding, even for where just the heat shield touches the plastic. I use a GL Mojave & Great Basin & the foil combined w/ their included heat shield does the trick.

heat shielding

You can get the self adhesive stuff from Summit Racing or Jegs. It makes a HUGE difference. I ran it under my seat for a while and I even added some to the voltage regulator bracket to help deflect the heat.

I'd also recommend using their (Summit) hose sleeves on fuel lines. It completes the heat protection, especially when running a vacuum pump.
