Haha, well I cant speak for Steve, but there were reasons that I packed heavy. #1, I wasnt 100 percent sure that I was coming back. I wasnt planning on not returning, but if something had crossed my path, I may not have.

#2. From the get go, I had planned to ride solo and live out of a tent for a month. It worked out that Steve ended up coming along and it worked out along the way that we ended up doing what you guys did a lot. Had I been solo, that extra bag would have been my home for the duration except for Deadhorse. Had I planned to do cabins like you all did, there would have been 1 dry bag behind me.

#3. If you had asked me why, I would have told you.

BTW, thanks to all 3 of you for following me at Destruction Bay when I was having engine trouble. Im glad it was probably bad gas but I also think there is a problem in the evap system somewhere, I just havent sorted it out yet.

Hey Brian,

Just joking with you guys, I'm not really a light packer myself.
Are you home yet?

Two weeks cycling in Alaska, that sounds great! I'm getting ahead of myself but we saw cyclist riding south from Deadhorse. Got to talk to them, two of them were headed to Mexico and the other was headed to Argentina. That's hardcore there.

You do know that you can fly to Alaska and rent motorcycles and ride, that saves alot of time riding accross the country.

June 14th Day 8 of the ride

We left Whitehorse Yukon and headed up the Klondike Highway towards Dawson City. Nice lady welcomed us to town.

Found a cheap motel right in town, unfortunately they were booked full for the night.

So we squeezed 4 tents onto this spot at the RV Park/campgrounds in town.

The next morning we used the high speed ferry to cross the Yukon River and start the "Top of The World Highway"

Found some gravel

Maxbet the "bird whisperer" I didn't expect Bald Eagles to be this friendly.

Big Moment-------June 15 day 9

Riding "The Top of The World Highway" was very cool and crossing the border into Alaska was very special.

This is the road condition as soon as we entered Alaska

And The Sign

Steve was very happy to be here also

More of the road

When we got to Chicken we tried to book a ride on this ferry but no one was around.

We ended our day in Fairbanks, it was 75 when we got there! Greg was able to get a replacement phone. We checked into the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and called Dan Armstrong at Adventure Cycleworks to schedule our bike maintenance for Monday morning.

Adventure Cycleworks

This morning is the second time that we will say goodbye to Steve, we will be going in different directions at this point. He will hang out at the University and wait for us to call him when our bikes are almost done so he can stop over to have his bike serviced. We are heading north as soon as we are done here and he will be picking up his wife Cheri at the airport this evening and they will start their tour of Alaska together.

This is Dan Armstrong of Adventure Cycleworks. He has alot of good stories. He is originally from New York, the Air Force brought him to Alaska and he never left.

We met Danny Green (dannyleo) at Dan's. I enjoyed talking to him. He was on his way from North Carolina to Deadhorse

New tires------these should do the job.

I'm glad to have tires like this, Maxbet doesn't have such an option with his Concours. He will be running street tires to Deadhorse

I was told the real spot is downtown but they moved the sign because of the traffic problems people like us were causing.

Dalton Highway (The Haul Road)

Riding this road to Deadhorse was the main focus of this trip for me. Yes I was very happy to ride to Alaska but riding the Dalton Highway was what I had obsessed about. We had talked about our strategy for getting to Deadhorse, one day up--one day back,,, or ride to Wiseman and then ride to Deadhorse and back to Wiseman in one day and back to Fairbanks the next day. It was after 2 pm when we left Adventure Cycleworks so riding to Wiseman and staying overnight made sense. That evening we decided we would stay over at Deadhorse if we could find a motel. We did find rooms at the Prudoe Bay Hotel. I am happy we did it this way.

This is where it started.

Here are some shots of the road.

And we thought we were tough

And our friend the motor-grader making loose gravel

Gas Station Northern Alaska style------Yukon Camp

Stop at "The Hot Spot" for something to eat. As we were eating the owner ask if we wanted to see a bear, just behind the buildings and there one was.

We were having perfect weather and made it to the Arctic Circle without any problems. This is as far North as Maxbet went when he was here two years ago, so this would be new road for all of us from here on.
