Check for apps on your phone though. I found one for my iPhone called GPS tracker, which allows people to track me where ever i have reception. The apps goes offline after 20 mins to not drain your battery.. Not the best solution i know, but better than nothing! Best of luck to you!
Thanks man...I appreciate the thought. I'm more interested in the summoning for help option than the tracking for fun option.

Malaysia for a month sounds awesome! Have a great time! Is there a ride report thread?

Oh yeah I meant it as a safety thing. But I guess it's useless since where we tend to go there is no cell reception.

I'm sure it will be...for my dad! Haha he is going for business. So no riding and no fun. :( I'll be doing Canada though in the next couple weeks though so stay posted!

Can anyone suggest a good day trip from Oakland (in any direction) that will give me fun pavement and some dirt/fireroads/etc of a moderate skill level (not newb but not super vet)?

As a long-time bay area mc rider I'm familiar with the great road rides but looking for a day trip that will mix it up.

Fair warning to inmates. DSM8 and I will be on our way tomorrow. Angels camp Friday night and then play in the mountians and over to half moon bay on Saturday. You had better lock up your wives, kids and small pets (Dave's preference).

Here's a good one:
Get yourself up to ukiah, either by slabbing it up 101 or taking fun roads, your choice. Take talmage exit, and mill creek road (might be wrong about that name) up towards cow mt, and just ride the fire road through Cow, or jump on some trails if you feel like doing a bit more. After that, head north on 29, and then you've got a choice: head north out of upper lake to penny pines, then head east on M10 (this is the longer route), or head around the lake to clearlake oaks, then long valley road to bartlett springs road. There are other options for getting up there, but I can't remember road names very well, you'll have to look them up. Take bartlett springs road all the way over to bear valley, then south to hook up with 20 again, then cross 20 and head south on 16. If you have time, you can cut off from winters and ride the berryessa roads to get back to susuin valley.

That's a pretty long day, but it's totally doable if you keep moving, and if you want more riding of dirt or twisties, there are a lot of places to add nice riding miles.

Please, do NOT take trails if you're riding alone. A guy did that last summer on an R1200GS and got stuck for 4 days. Eventually managed to hike out to town. Died of a heart attack a week later. Very sad story.

I haven't ridden those fire roads, but those are probably ok, although I'd advise riding with someone. I nearly got stranded on a fire road once. I was riding alone. Fortunately, I had some tools and after a couple hours in blazing heat, came up with an idea that managed to limp my way to civilization where I called a friend to drive 120 miles down to Paso Robles to tow a trailer down to pick me up.

You guys and gals are safe. DSM8 and I are out of the area.

One question? What gives with the harley riders rideing at 10 - 15 under the speed limit and being dicks about being passed by a bike?
Other that that, we had some great fun riding! Sorry to see that the lakes are so low.

Thanks for the suggestions on a day ride—and the cautionary warning. I realized that I was missing the "990 essentials" otherwise known as skidplate and sidestand relocator, so I kept to the pavement.

Knoxville-Berryessa was an absolute blast.

We went last weekend, and last year. Haven't seen a dirt road the 990 can't handle north of Fort Bragg yet.

We actually took the USAL trail from HWY 1 to Shelter Cove, then Kings Peak all the way to Wilder Ridge this last weekend. USAL is in good shape this year with just a few deep dry ruts and rough spots.

You should also take Fort Bragg /Sherwood road from Fort Bragg to Willits.
