Downieville this weekend

Downieville Trails, Gold Lake camping, July 17-21, 2014

The fun has already begun, we'll need some fresh riders this weekend. Bring a plated dirt bike to enjoy stuff like this (from yesterdays ride)-First Divide Trail.

There may be some interest in some big bike ADv loops as well (no designated singletrack). Some of the local jeep roads are pretty gnarly.

Or, just come up for the extensive BYOB happy hours

If u come up bring more ICE and TONIC WATER!

Packsaddle campground near Packer Lake #16

Plenty of dry,dispersed camping nearby

Thanks for sharing that. Interesting ride.

I was imagining trying to get my big KTM through there, with the aluminum side cases and all. And getting hung up a couple of dozen times while bashing them up on both sides.

It would be a serious enough challenge on my XR650L. Give the Cycra hand guards a bit of a workout.

Do you have a GPX file for that trail? Someday when I get a bit braver I would like to try it.

My stock trailwings are crying looking at that video.. But it doesn't mean i'm not considering it anyways, I've taken it through Georgetown and Foresthill OHV areas on these tires.

Don't need a GPS, just go out Main Street downtown Downieville and follow the signs. The trail starts right on the East edge of town.

When yer in town pick up this map at any MTB shop in town. JB

about this downieville thing

1st...
Wish I was there! Haven't been riding much at all this year. Turning 60 Y/O...
Those who know my posts recognize that I've done toomanyrides.
Discovered the trails up there in 76 with a trip up the empire creek trail.
Always been a well kept secret until the advent of the mountain bike.
Now overrun and too popular, still a favorite. Typically I do a big camping trip each year and gold lake is many-times the base of exploration.
Wish I had joined in on this one! Have a great time!
Let me show ya the snake lake tough spot, and the hieroglyphics ok?

Trails such as the third divide had always been cherished because they were smooth like a "bookshelf pathway". Remember to tread lightly as to not create washboards such as found at sugarpine!

I just spent last week at Gold Lake. Because of the lack of snowmelt, the lake is warm this year. Have fun all!!

Sierra Dirt Roads - Saturday, August 2

I haven't been on a good ride for about a month, so I'm planning one this coming Saturday, August 2. The main part goes from Foresthill to Placerville, with as much dirt roads as I can fit in.

Here's the approximate route: http://goo.gl/maps/oGb47

I plan on leaving Folsom somewhere between 6:30 and 8:00 am. Time adjustable based on whoever wants to go along and when it is most convenient for them to leave.

I'll be riding up Salmon Falls, along Highway 49, Old Foresthill, then into the town of Foresthill (about an hour away) to top off the fuel. The route is about 110 miles with maybe another ten if we run over to Hell Hole Reservoir. As it is, we'll be going by French Meadows Reservoir and Stumpy Meadows Reservoir. Next fuel is in Placerville, so make sure your have at least 120 miles of range.

I've been on all of these roads before except the dirt road from French Meadows to Hell Hole. These roads shouldn't be an issue for any bike that claims any dirt
capability, but some of them would rip the oil pan off of a regular car, so they're a bit rough.

I'll go alone if nobody is interested, but am happy to make the offer if any of you want to go on this ride. Let me know and we'll nail down an exact time and meeting place.

The one from the end of Foresthill Road down to French meadows is the rough one. I came close to dumping it once the last time I rode it.

Thanks. I didn't see anything in the area where I plan to ride. And I'm always willing to adjust routes as necessary anyway. That and making lots of U-turns when going somewhere I'm not totally familiar with.
