I can't see that they would be any better than the tires that are on it - they were surprisingly good on dirt/gravel and they stick like shit to a blanket on tarseal

Well I've brought some used luggage

which turned up today so I banged the top box on and was thinking of going for a ride tomorrow to test it and my new merino thermal t shirt thingy out.

I was planning on leaving home by 10 (unless its wet....) and heading up to the bridge cafe (get there about 11.30) on Gorge Rd between Balance and Woodville. depending on which side has better weather I'll either head towards Apiti or loop back south though the Wairarapa. Planning on riding a fair bit of gravel either way.

Plan to be home by 6-7pm.

Not Mark. Only 5 star accomodation for him. Tent is a four letter word, and a sleeping bag is who you take home for a one night stand.

How do you find the nakedness on these cold days? Do you think protection would be wise?

Serious question Bart/Nordie/Padmei/pretty much everyone. No innuendo intended.

Protection is always wise.

its been a bigger problem than I'd anticipated
its like the chill factor sucks the warmth right out of you and you get colder and colder until you can't think straight.

What's tolerable at 80k quickly becomes intolerable at 110-120k (the sv's happy place)

last night I left Taihape at 7ish and it was proper cold. I had on:
a merino wool vest
an mx top
body armour/pressure suit
a sweat shirt
a light jacket
my normal riding jacket (no liners)
a balaclava and a buff
winter gloves with separate thermal liner and heated grips at 75%

I was too cold until I put my rain suit over the top of everything and that made all the difference. I may have looked like the michelin man but I was comfortable all the way home. It also meant I didn't have to stop when I hit rain at ashurst

I don't really want to put a screen on as I don't want to get any buffeting around my helmet but I may have to as I really like riding in winter (no bugs, no dust, fewer cars...) but I don't like wearing so much crap

Yea it's the gear that makes a bigger difference than a screen IMO.

I spent 3 winters commuting around Marlborough on my bike and we know Blenheim is a cold hell of a place on a frosty morn.
-5 or more and then factor in the wind chill of doing 100km/h........the coldest I recorded was -23'c at Okaramio one morning

I added a screen and heated grips to the XT but I was still freeeezing.
Once I put the summer jacket away and brought a proper winter jacket and pants with liners I was in my happy place even without the windscreen.

Riding to work I would be wearing my work clothes (generally on my torso, a fleece singlet, polo top, fleece jumper, windproof vest) and then a winter jacket with liner in.
Winter pants with liner, winter gloves and a balaclava under my helmet.

The big thing is keeping that damned cold wind out.

I made sure I got gear that had easy to install/remove liners so that I would actually use them as heading home in the sunny afternoon it was too warm for the liners and jumpers.

Then after 6 years with only a motorbike in the shed I wised up (gave up?) and brought a truck to commute in the winter instead.
The winter gear has since been passed on and now I just layer up under my summer jacket for those winter weekend rides.
