Laugh Old fool looking to raise funds for Postie bike ride in South Australia

Hi, I'm a 66 year old New Zealander from Wellington NZ. I retired earlier this month and I'm currently travelling solo on a DR650 motorbike around South Australia.

I've leapt at the opportunity to take part in the 2014 Apex Outback Postie Bike Ride to be held in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia in late August. A link to a YouTube clip from last years event is here http://youtu.be/5ycfJFKNrfs

The ride is an fundraiser of a number of SA Apex Clubs (Apex Clubs are Community Service organisations similar to Lions, Jaycees & Rotary) for the construction of cabins to be used to provide retreat opportunities for people struggling with cancer and is in support of the Cancer Council of South Australia.More about Apex Clubs in Australia here http://www.apex.org.au.

The ride aboard former Australia Post 'postie' bikes (Honda CT110's) is of 1000km over 4 days. Entrants pay $AUD400 to enter and are required to raise (or donate) a further $AUD500 which is used to fund the building of the cabins.
I'm appealing to friends, family, business associates and fellow adventure riders to assist me in raising or exceeding the $AUD500 donation. Any surplus will go to this cause.

The Apex Clubs (several combine to run this event) have kindly agreed to loan me a 'Postie' bike for the event. Any damage I do to the bike or me in this event, will be my cost.

The cause is very real for my extended family as my brother in laws young adult daughter died after a 4 year battle with cancer last year. Whilst she was undergoing treatment he was also diagnosed with cancer. For a time both father and daughter were undergoing treatment. Thankfully my brother in law is currently clear of cancer.
Ask away with any questions and or send me a PM if you'd like to help.

Cheers Oaters

PS - Aussie Trev has already committed a $100 to the cause

In for $50 but you'll have to post some pics

Good to hear you're having fun in the Flinders area, we really enjoyed our travels around there back in 09.

Cheers

Count me in for $50.00 as well Oaters; guess you will PM the payment details?

Learnt most of my riding skills on a CT90 on a south Island sheep farm and it still shows to this day should have paid more attention to the sheep dodging skills though - darn it!

Hi Clint - 'twas your ride report that inspired me - I believe it was Kipo who sent you two a marked up map - Aussie Trev (a pal of Kipo and PBee) has taken me under his wing

I'll certainly share pics and write a report - have submitted my entry fee and am awaiting info in order to set up a MyCause link

Kind regards to both you & Rosie

I really appreciate your kind support

Conscious we've not had the pleasure of riding together yet - sometime in the future perhaps when you've acquired your new KTM and fully healed

Your experience with that sheep has been very much on my mind as I've passed many 'Roos and Emus. Met an old fella travelling in a 4WD with his wife up in the Flinders and he was saying they'd had an Emu leap over the bonnet of their hilux - so close his wife could see its individual feathers!

I'll be sure to post payment details for your donation as soon as I have them

If folk were comfortable I may suggest a deposit to a KiwiBank account I'd set up solely for this fundraising and then let folk have the transaction statement at the end - else it'll be using MyCauses who take an 8% fee I'm told

Cheers Oaters - formerly Aslan

Pete's not wrong - I get his point entirely - I'd submit there's a lot of goodwill between both NZ & Aus - certainly my experience is that these SA adventure riders are top folk

Cheers Oaters

Our Aussie cousins in SA

Check this and subsequent posts by Kipo from pre ride for the Postie in this SA thread

My strong recommendation is for those that are able, come and experience adventure riding in SA - I'm spending my kids inheritance and as Grareth Morgan has been heard to opine for those not saving for their retirement years 'life's pleasures will amount to milk arrowroot biscuits' :)

Go well Oaters

i donated quite a lot of money to the rfds in oz whilst living there. couldnt bear the thought of needing them on my travels without ever contributing. fortunately never came to that.

i figure the westpac rescue choppers are about the equivalent here in nz

good luck with your endeavours oaters it'll be a ripper trip and anything to do with cancer is worthy imo

Thumb These SA ADV riders are tops

See here for the Apex Club's little Postie Bike - Kipo has generously prepared for my use commencing Thursday through Sunday - a 1000km in the Outback

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showp...&postcount=123

Anyone contemplating taking a look at Aus, I can't speak highly enough of my experiences here

I'm currently holed up in a Caravan Park in Quorn ( in my tent ) - heading down to Port Augusta for the briefing and start of the event the following day on Wednesday. To all fellow inmates who've donated to this worthwhile cause - huge thanks and appreciation

Go well - Oaters.
