When is your ride?

I just got back from Newfoundland. I have been planning my trip for 2 years. I was going to be there from August 2-August 7 and travel the trailway from Port aux Basques to Argentia. We were on the trail for 2 hours, 18 miles and my father and law fell and broke his leg. I got back yesterday. When is your trip? Is there still room for one more? Will I be able to return by August 30th? I was there, it was awesome, for 18 out of 540 miles....

Sorry to hear about your dad but thankfully it wasn't more serious! Bones can heal!

We're all crossing on the 17th and have the return ferry booked for the 28th.

Hey!!

How do I get more information on your plans? Do you need anything from my planning? How do I convince my wife it is ok to go for a 10 day ride with a bunch of strangers?

Here's the main planning thread for the trip. Beware, it started last year so there are pockets of valuable trip info interspersed with prose, photos and general discussion.

As for the wife, you're on your own!

You will have a riot! I've met Canuman and can attest to his affability! I've also met up with and ridden with forum members I've never met before and it's always good!

Jeez, Steph, we sure have you conned!

Scottie, if you're there at the PAB ferry dock on the morning of the 18th sporting an ADV sticker or at least the salute, just look for the gritty bikes. We'll fit you in.

You'll see detailed V-twins aplenty. That lot tend to shy away from us for some reason. Must be my cologne.

Hope Pop heals fast.

Working out the details

I am still discussing the trip with my wife, I live on Long Island which is very close to Atlasexp. I wrote him an email to see what his plans are.

I still need to get an ADV sticker, I have been meaning to do so.

I would probably want to stay in the frat room if there is still space, I will bring earplugs...

It looks like you are taking the PAB ferry both ways, will that still allow us to make it out to St Johns? I saw the map of the trip on the first forum, then on page 9 you posted day 1, 2 and 3 but that was all I found. I do not have a gps, but I have nice maps.

It sounds like you guys have the exact same style as me, not a race, and camping. It sounds like a trip with you guys would be a blast.

Thank you for the good words for my father in law. He is mainly a road rider, so his skills were pushed. He will be having surgery on Tuesday to put in a plate and screws, then should be walking/riding again 4 weeks after that. Should be a full recovery.

If I can work everything out, I look forward to meeting all of you!!!

I ride a DR650, T63 front and rear,
I have my own tent, and cooking gear

Unfortunately, per this night's conversation, AtlasEXP is out. He's facing an eviction notice from his apartment, even though he paid the rent, and has to go through a lot of crap in the coming weeks. I'd rather live in Hell than the NY boroughs, let me tell you. They have no mercy down there. His family has thrown in heartily, as they know that this is his big trip of the year, but sometimes a man has to be manly.

Katya and the baby are coming back from Cheboksary soon. I know he misses them.

Anton will be sorely missed. He's a good camper, a good rider, and an excellent interior designer. He was up at the Palace of the People for the past two weeks, and we accomplished some really nice finish work. It's good to be able to feel I'm living in a home once again. No gender comments, kids. The downstairs bath and hall ROCK!

As to the ADV sticker, Gadgetboy will quite happily hook you up, but I wouldn't hang off a rope for delivery. Canada Post is somewhat casual about on-time.

Well, that's sore news! Hopefully he gets everything straightened out. Hopefully this pattern of last minute cancellations doesn't continue! :(

Inertia

It's common, actually. There's always a load of inertia and indecision before any major trip. I came within a moment of calling off the 2013 Rock ride. I'm glad I didn't. When you finally decide to swing a leg over and go, you're committed. Before that, the household chores and the quiet morning cup of coffee in your own surroundings have a very strong call.

Once you get to that great land and its good people, you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner. Newfoundland may be one of the last best places on earth. I am not a tremendously religious person, and haven't had the best experience with humanity. Newfoundland taught me that you can trust your neighbors. It's perhaps one of the most valuable lessons I've learned.

As the fellow on the quad at Howley's said in 2013: "I'll keep an eye out for ya." He meant it.

Looking forward to meeting all of you.

You might check with the boys on the route south of Gander. I guess the tracks need a little work out there.

The 2013 tracks are pretty reliable.
