Suzuki JR80 Drum Brake

Hi All. I have got my daughter JR 80 and when I went to replace the tube the other day the drum break assembly came apart. When I have tried to put it back together, the external section does not go into to the internal housing cleanly. It is proud about 3 mm. Its just enough to stop it from pulling together cleanly. Does anyone know anything about this or come up against it in the past?
