That there's the Lower Alabama Range...I think maybe one of those peaks is Britton Hill, Florida's highest point. Right now there's prolly just a little bit of snow left up there; might head up this weekend to get outta the heat, and see if this newfangled fuel injection on the Wee really does work at high altitudes

This is Exactly. What. Happens.

It really was too good to last. I'm glad I got to enjoy it before it got all delineated and shit. And I plan on enjoying it some more, before it gets entirely closed down and becomes a "No Motorized Vehicles Allowed" area. Which I'm fairly certain will happen in my lifetime. Although I hope I'm wrong

I know a buncha you POGs are aviation buffs. Back when I was a wee lad I was a fairly hardcore one myself, building model airplanes, reading Jane's Book of Aircraft and the like, spending hours looking at the displays at the annual Barksdale AFB airshow, dreaming of being a pilot. So anyhow, I saw this pic and it took me right down Memory Lane; I remember being intrigued by this beast when I was a kid, to me it looked like a modern jet fighter with a turboprop engine. Weird and ugly, but cool!

Gannet AEW3 XL502 1988.JPEG

It's an airborne early warning (a mini-AWACS like the modern E-2 Hawkeye) variant of the Fairey Gannet, used by the Royal Navy back in the '60s and '70s. The article talks about the extensive modifications to the airframe to to make everything fit—pretty neat!

The engine used is especially cool (the Double Mamba). It is actually two engines mounted side-by-side that drive the coaxial counter-rotating propellers, each engine driving one of the propellers. One engine could be shutdown in flight to save fuel, with its corresponding propeller feathered (like in the photo below). I don't think that this sort of configuration was widely used in any other applications.

Didn't know about the double engines, turns out that's an even more interesting aircraft than I thought! And since we're on the subject, I remember back when the Falklands War was going on, and this plane right here made the cover of a magazine, I think maybe Popular Mechanics--but I remember thinkin, Holy cow Batman, that's badazzzzzzzzz! Then I found out it was called the "Pucara." And I thought, man what a dorky name! Hey, I was only 12...
