Adv 950S owner with the chance to own a 950SE

As the title says, I have the opportunity to sell my 950S and get the 950SE.

I have never ridden an SE before and wanted to hear from anyone who has ridden both these bikes.

Just to give you some background about me and what I use my bike for.... My 950S is used to ride everywhere. I have rallyed with it in Wales and then ridden it home to Ireland after it was over. I am 5' 9" and the 950S is a real stretch but I have got used to it.

I rode to the Western Sahara from Ireland on a 1200GS and swore I would do that trip on a lighter bike. That is why I bought the 950S. The SE is much lighter again but will I hate the long journey now with no sort of wind protection for a week getting down there.... or will I be grinning all the way?

Many thanks in advance .

Practicality!

When I was in Ireland 2 years ago, I noticed just about all your nice twisty roads were paved= 950A. Not much dirt track or gravel roads. Yes for your outward bound trips the SE might be nice as long as they are very short trips=Small tank. You have to ask yourself, what will 75% of my riding be? The 950A is so much more practicle in most situations.

I haven`t riden the SE as yet either but I have sat on one and it is taller than my 950S..

At 5' 9" you might find it a bit of a stretch..

It depends on whether you NEED it or just WANT it..

I`d stick with the "S"..

In your case it has already proven to be a very capable machine..

Actually, you'll be giggling most of the time. I'm 5'9'' only after I stretch on my inversion table (The Rack) It's hell turning 50, and drilling teeth all day can do a number on your lower back, after 22 years...but I digress. Get the SE - you know you'll never be happy till you scratch that itch, and then, like me, you'll be glad you did. I bought the first SE to appear in my state (I think - at least that's what they told me) and the grin is pretty much etched in stone, at least when I'm on it. Now if only I could say that about the Squaw. Oops! Forget I said that!

I'm a lawyer, so tend to feel strongly both ways. It sounds to me as though your current bike is probably the most practical one for the kind of riding you do, i.e., mostly paved roads but some dirt, some long trips.....exactly what the 950 was designed for. The SE is very dirty. I wouldn't be concerned about the wind buffeting issue nearly so much as the limited fuel-capacity. I'd be happier with my 950 (standard Adventure model) if it had even greater range than its current stock configuration, but, then again, you don't have the vast distances of eastern Montana and western Canada to contend with either..... Whichever way you decide to go, I imagine you'll have fun.

I have both an SE and Adv S. The specs say both have the same seat height, but the SE is much narrower in the mid section which makes it much easier for me to touch the ground (I'm 5'8"). The SE feels much more nimble and dirt bike like compared to the Adv. You will notice the lack of wind protection on an SE. I prefer the SE for offroad, agressive curvy road riding and in town riding. I prefer the Adv for trips and cold weather riding.
I was afraid to buy the SE since I thought it might seem like the same bike as the Adv, but they feel completely different.
